<title>I remember back in college with those students who always raised their hand and/or interrupted and I could see the frustration on the teachers faces and now I&#39;m in that same place.... I use an anonymous classroom response system and that has helped level the playing field for participation but we also need to skill build public speaking and empowering students (especially those who feel silenced or marginalized) to speak up while respectfully finding a way to push others to yield the &#39;space&#39; - these are the tools I&#39;m excited to dig into</title>

<title>I&#39;m so disappointed that someone in our department would actually say this: &quot; The professor was straight “This is a funnel class. A lot of you will not move on.” I felt so defeated. I had never been in a lecture hall, let alone one that was so full. I just knew that this wasn’t going to work for me…The most interesting part for me was that at the beginning, they just went right into the material. They said that most people drop because most people can’t handle it.” terrible</title>

<title>the importance of first day connection - I actually think it starts even before that with my first email to the class - I direct them to a sharing exercise and then I build word clouds around things like what they are excited about, what they are worried about, what&#39;s their favorite ice cream, etc.... and then share those to the entire class.... I expect that they will only retain ONE thing from that first class meeting- so I have to figure out what that might be? maybe why you should care about this topic? what is our umbrella goal for this class for their personal/professional development?</title>
