Sam Dawson is a Caucasian male who is diagnosed with autism and has the mental capacity of a seven-year-old. Sam gets a homeless woman pregnant and when she gives birth to the baby girl, Lucy, she leaves Sam to raise the child on his own. Sam is employed at Starbucks which helps him financially support his daughter and himself. He also has a group of friends that have disabilities and do their best to support him.

When his daughter reaches seven years of age, it becomes evident that she is smarter than her father and does not have any disabilities. The school system realizes that Lucy began to restrain from using her full potential in class because she did not want to appear smarter than her father. The school system gets family social services involved and they take Lucy away. Even though Sam did well raising his daughter for the past seven years, the school system and family services did not believe that he was capable of providing Lucy reliable support of a parent that she needs for continuous years.

Sam Dawson had a great support system. He had the support of his seven-year-old daughter Lucy. She reminded him daily that even though he had a disability she needed him as her father. Sam also had the support of his group of friends who had disabilities. They all fellow-shipped together weekly for video night and breakfast at IHOP. They also helped with the maintenance of Lucy. Annie was a longtime friend, and also Sam’s neighbor, who provides help with care taking for Lucy. By the end of the movie Sam gains the support of his lawyer, Rita, by showing her his compassion and love for his daughter.

Analysis of Practice, Policy and Ethical Issues: From A Social Work Perspective

As a social worker, our responsibility is to help families, individuals and groups with different issues they may face. One of our values, presented in the code of ethics, is the dignity and worth of a person. As social workers, we are supposed to respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. We are not supposed to base client treatment off differences, but instead, treat them with care and respect, while embracing uniqueness (NASW, 2008). In I am Sam, the court system made Sam feel as if he was not a suitable father and incapable of taking care of his daughter because of his disability. When the court took Lucy away they did not have any evidence of child neglect or past records of Sam harming her while in his care. In this case Sam has the right to have custody over his daughter; continuing to raise her with the help of his support system.
