Description of the Boats and Interior

As you can imagine a Slave ship during The Middle passage was a giant vessel. The ships ranged carried about 12.5 million slaves. Condition on the slave ship was not as dreamed. They were about 4 and a half feet tall, from the ceiling to decks floor. Knowing this, African Americans would definitely be cramped in that confined space. The majority of the time the slaves would be chained by metal shackles while being cramped or be lying down. The sellers of the slaves made the boat design like this on purpose of transporting more slaves. The slaves were separated from men in one deck and women and children another. Since space was so confined there was no doubt that sickness would spread. Man-slaves died from this since the disease was so easy to spread.

There were 336 males, 226 males, which made there a total 562 people on board. Within 17 days, 55 people were thrown overboard. The slaves were put in hatchways under the ship, and they had to sit so close together that they couldn't move either during the day or night during their voyage. Whenever any noise would be heard below, the slave driver of the ship would hurt them, and even seemed happy to do so. The mate of the slaver never thought that the slaves deserved to get fresh air and water because they would murder them all. Many of the children could not stand because they were kept in the most remote parts of the ship. Those who had gone on other ships said that this one was one of the best they had ever seen showing how terrible these ships and conditions were for others.
