Alcoholism alters an individual's ability to control their emotions and also impacts decision making.

"Someone had slashed him apart with a knife and stolen all the money. I knew it was Dad, but at the same time, I couldn’t believe he’d stoop this low” (Walls, 228).

This picture of a father being drunk in front of his kids is a reflection of the time when Rex stole Jeannette and Lori's hard-earned money they were saving in order to escape to New York and start a new life. This is an example of alcoholism because Rex's addiction to alcohol altered his decision-making which made him do terrible things even to his kids.

Non-conformity plays a huge role in how parents raise their children as well as how the children get the care they need.

"He told me we were going to check out, Rex Walls-style" (Walls, 14).

This picture that says "Non-Conformist Bird Goes Against Society" is a reflection of Rex doing the skedaddle when Jeannette was in the hospital for being burnt while cooking hotdogs unattended. This is an example of non-conformity because Rex and Rose Mary didn't follow the rules of the hospital in order for Jeannette to fully heal and get the care she needed due to the fact that they cannot pay for the bill.

Perseverance is a trait that can help you get through your struggles.

"And when we reached the crest of the ridge, and there, across a wide river, was a huge island jammed tip to tip with skyscrapers, their glass glowing like fire in the setting sun" (Walls, 245).

This picture of New York is the reflection of the time when Jeannette arrived in New York for the first time after telling herself to start a new life and never look back. This is an example of perseverance because Jeannette worked hours and even got her money stolen, but she still managed to work even harder and save enough money to escape Welch and start a new life in New York City where opportunities are everywhere.

Loss of childhood causes children to mature and learn responsibility early in life.

"When we wanted money, we walked along the roadside picking up beer cans and bottles that we redeemed for two cents each" (Walls, 62).

This picture of a little kid alone is a reflection of Jeannette and Brian's upbringing; they always had to find ways to fend for themselves. This is an example of the theme "loss of childhood" because instead of playing with other kids outside, they felt that they were responsible to find food for themselves when their parents have nothing to provide for them.

Neglect plays a negative role in a child's well-being and upbringing.

"I was standing on a chair in front of the stove, wearing a pink dress my grandmother had bought for me" (Walls, 9).

This picture is a reflection of when Jeannette was cooking hot dogs unsupervised at the age of 3 years old. This is an example of neglect because this was the time when Jeannette almost died when she burned almost her whole body when her tutu got caught on fire while cooking hot dogs. This shows how careless her parents were; leaving a 3 year old alone engaging with heat and fire. That neglect could've killed their daughter, but throughout the story, they still continued to leave Jeannette play with fire.

Acceptance brings an end to hatred, or any emotions caused by someone.

"We raised our glasses. I could almost hear Dad chuckling at Mom's comment in the way he always did when he was truly enjoying something" (Walls, 288).

This picture is a reflection of Jeannette and her husband's farm, where she invited her family for Thanksgiving and where her mom is currently living in. This is an example of this theme because Jeannette being able to invite her mom to live in her property and provide her with her own little place shows how she's accepted things that had happened in the past. Jeannette was able to find acceptance by finding the good in her upbringing.
