It’s interesting that this is one of the only photos I have from middle school. I believe I was 14 and in 8th grade. At first glance it appears as if I’m part of a fun, close group. But, in reality, I was not. I did have friends, but none of them are actually in this picture. In fact, don’t think we ever would have thought to get into a photo together. My “friend group” was forced. We liked each other, but were not close. If Instagram was a thing back then, I might have posted this picture to give my peers the impression that I was part of a clique. Like so much social media, It would not have reflected reality. Brown and Knowles list not wanting to let go of childhood as a characteristic of young adolescents. Personally, I was ready for it to be done. For me it wasn’t “the longest decade”, but it was definitely the longest three years!
