This relationship runs throughout the whole opening until the man's daughter is abducted.

Another social group within our opening sequence is the group of teenagers at the end, the husband-wife relationship, and lastly the old man's interactions with the little girl. 

All the social groups included in our opening sequence are small, with the majority being 2-person relationships. We did this by making them hold hands while walking, showing a strong bond between the two. It is immediately clear that they are father and daughter because the girl shows no level of discomfort in holding the hand of a man that is clearly much older than her. Seemingly insignificant gestures such as the father looking down at his daughter all contribute to the portrayal of their relationship.

Usually when children go trick or treating they go in large groups with their friends and family, so although they seem like two normal people, this isolation of the two characters has negative connotations. The height difference between the two has a juxtaposing effect, whereby the young girl is made to look a lot smaller and vulnerable by having a tall man walking next to her. This then evokes a sense of foreboding in the audience which is emphasized by the creepy music. 

At the same time, the Dad's height in relation to hers gives the audience the notion that he is the protector of this girl, building on the idea of a strong bond between the two characters. 

The man is portrayed as being quite serious due to his demeanor. He walks with confidence and has a good posture, which is also suggestive of high status. But this is then challenged when he loses his temper on the phone. His composure slips a bit, and he becomes irritated. His focus changes from his daughter to the situation at home, and her hand slips from his. He is totally unaware of the fact that his daughter has wondered off, and the 'good dad' image is destroyed. There is a very strong stereotype surrounding teenage criminals and gangs, and we exploited the stereotype and integrated it into our opening sequence. 

Although the teenagers did not have any dialogue or anything that suggested strong relationships between members of the gang, there is still evidence of there being connections between the characters. 

This first becomes clear when two of the gang members step out from behind the bushes. It is evident that the abduction/killing of the girl was premeditated, and this shows that there is good communication between the gang members. It also shows that they all have the same bad intentions, suggesting that they identify with each other through their criminality.

As the gang members step out from behind the bushes, it is clear that one of the gang members steps our first, and is then followed by another member. This suggests that there is a hierarchy within the gang, and although they may be perceived as 'low-life' and be looked down upon by society, they counteract this by creating their own hierarchies within their groups in order to ameliorate their self-image. 

This hierarchy creates strong leadership roles within groups which is shown in our opening sequence when one gang member steps out before the others (suggesting that this character is a leader) and towards the end of the opening sequence when the leading character is the first to grab the girl, and is then helped by the other two gang members.

It is not exactly clear that he is talking to his wife on the phone, however his tone and dialogue is very suggestive of it. When he poses the question 'Why did he show up?' it is implying that this is someone that he is living with, and since he has a daughter and seems of a suitable age, all evidence points towards it being his wife. This is then made even more clear when he softens his tone towards then end, suggesting that he is speaking to someone that he cares about, especially when he says 'I'll sort it out, don't worry'. 

Real-life couples and families go through ordeals that can seem like a nuisance, and most of the time they are overcome and the family moves on, and this is shown when the father becomes irritated and then calms down again and brushes it aside. This is portraying the husband-and-wife relationship between the two characters as being relatively conventional and normal. The man obviously cares for his partner as he should, and the same goes for his daughter. 

This then makes the audience wonder what the implications might be on their relationship when the wife founds out what has happened to their daughter. Will she blame him?
