Hello from Exeter, UK. I am currently studying Msc Global Sustainability Solutions and am conducting some carbon accounting for a Local Recycling company as part of my Green Consultants module.

I am an intern at the Climate Action Hub in Exeter and represent 30 local organisations, their actions and support volunteers to collaborate and expand their knowledge and skills to make Exeter a truly intercultural and carbon resilient community.

I was so thrilled to be selected to join the Future 17 course, as this is an invaluable networking opportunity to learn the vital skills needed to solve Global Problems. A truly transformative way of learning, applying learning, networking and solving industry specific challenges.

My educational background has consisted of an undergraduate and an honours degree in biodiversity and ecology. I am currently in my first year of an MSc in Botany. Over the next two years, I aim to determine the effect of megaherbivore rewilding (specifically desert black rhinos) on the vegetation structure and function within a semi-arid savanna, in the Southern Kalahari, South Africa. I will focus on the effectiveness of this strategy for the management of bush encroachment, as well as its implications for the carbon sequestering capacity of the system.

My interests include, and are definitely not limited to, music (both creating and listening to), exploring new beaches, surfing and trying new sports. I also make cards in my free time and really enjoy giving them to friends and family! I love to travel, particularly if it includes a mountain, lake or beach - you get the idea :)

Greetings esteemed colleagues! It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you today as we embark on this incredible journey to explore the intricacies of the Sustainable Development Goals.

My name is Luckmore, and I am thrilled to be a part of this multidisciplinary and multicultural programme. With a background in Economics, I have always been passionate about the eradication of poverty and the promotion of sustainable economic growth, which are both key components of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In addition to my academic background, I am an avid charity worker, with a particular interest in helping the poor. My involvement in charity work has allowed me to witness firsthand the impact that poverty can have on people's lives, and has strengthened my resolve to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, especially SDG1, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.

As we embark on this journey, I am also excited to share with you that I am currently pursuing a PhD in Public and Development Management at Stellenbosch University. My research is focused on investigating the effectiveness of anti-corruption strategies that are being implemented to combat corruption in the healthcare systems of Zimbabwe and South Africa. This research is closely linked with several SDGs, including SDG3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, and SDG16, which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

My involvement in charity work has also honed my interpersonal skills, and my ability to empathise with people from diverse backgrounds. I have developed skills in project management, fundraising, and community outreach, which I believe will be invaluable in contributing to the attainment of the SDGs.

My expectations for this programme are high. I hope to learn more about the best practices and innovative solutions for achieving the SDGs, especially SDG1. I also look forward to engaging with participants from diverse backgrounds, who can share their unique perspectives and experiences. As a firm believer in the power of collaboration, I am excited about the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals and collectively work towards a common goal.

In conclusion, I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to be part of this programme. The diversity of perspectives, ideas, and cultures represented in this programme will enrich our learning experience and help us achieve our common goal of a sustainable and equitable world. I am delighted to be a part of this program and look forward to collaborating with you all to achieve the SDGs!

Hello!! I´m Fabiana Oliveira from São Paulo.
I participated in the 2022 Fututre17 Program and I liked it so much that I decided to participate in the 2023 edition too!
I am a civil engineer and I teach in the Architecture and Urbanism course at the University of São Paulo.
I completed a sandwich doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1998) and served as a visiting professor at the Centro Experimental de la Vivienda Economica (Córdoba -2012), at the Universita Degli Studi Di Roma La Sapienza (Rome - 2016) and at Oregon State University (Covallis-2022).
I try to convey to students the importance of actions to protect the environment and act sustainably in any consumption practice.
I am very interested and curious to learn about other countries, their cultures and history.

In my spare time I like to go to the theater, go out with friends, read and travel.

Hello! I’m Jimena, a third year BSc Psychology student at the University of Exeter. I’m actually from Spain, but currently living in the UK.
My hobbies include creative writing and consuming different types of stories — from novels to TV series and films and comics. In terms of sports, I enjoy running and love playing badminton, although I don’t play it as often since coming to uni.

I joined the Future17 program, because, even though I’m still unsure as to where to lead my career, I know I want to contribute to solving al least one of these global problems. If only for how painfully frustrating it is to know they exist. And Future17 seems like a perfect opportunity to start. Hello everyone, I'm Barbara. I'm a Ghanaian who has been living and working in Kenya for the last 2 years, and currently in my 2nd year at the Stellenbosch Business School studying for an MPhil in Development Finance.

I decided to join in Future17 program because I'm interested in learning more about the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and innovatives ways to get solutions to real-life problems. I would like to correlate science with the development of a region (for instance, Buenaventura, Colombia) so, I think the Future17 Program can give me tools to continue in this focus and then, maybe, put it in practice.
I believe that science is an excellent strategy to reduce inequality (SDG10). Promoting the observation of science as a whole that surrounds us can support more young people to study disciplines in the STEM area and thus contribute substantially to the economic development of their regions that are often vulnerable, for example, creating companies based on science, technology and innovation under problems and/or products found in their respective regions. It is a popularization of science in all its forms.

I'm a PhD student in Tourism Management at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. My research is about Memorable Touristic Experiences in Protected Areas (SDG15), so I strongly believe the power of experiencing nature and learning (SDG4) about its value and importance to preserve our natural ecosystems. Hello, all. I am a lecturer in Conservation Ecology at Stellenbosch University (SU). I grew up in Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats, studies at the University of Cape Town, worked in the NGO sector in rural areas in the Northern Cape and Western Cape before coming to SU. I continue to work with small-scale farmers in rural and urban settings. My favorite biome of the 9 in South Africa: Fynbos!

My PhD dealt with finding sustainability pathways in the small-scale rooibos and honeybush sectors in South Africa. These are two international tea exports from South Africa's endemic Fynbos that cannot be grown anywhere else in the world. Plants harvested in the wild - and on which some rural households depend for their livelihoods - are sometimes under threat of over-harvesting, habitat fragmentation, and more chronically, climate change.

SDG 15 is the basis for most of my work, although, as a social-ecological systems researcher, I touch on most of them in my teaching, supervision and community engagement. For my research, I like to think about collective action for conservation outcomes, and how governance (SDG16) can lead to positive change and agency amongst local actors.

Why the Future17 Programme for me? I already designed a course based on similar concepts in my regular teaching. Engaging with an international student cohort on similar issues is like my course on steroids!

My research explores the roles of businesses in sustainability transitions, specifically trying to see how large, established firms can create value for fundamental shifts to more sustainable societies. My reason for this focus is the belief that those with the reach and resources (financial and intellectual) to do so, should be doing more to accelerate transitions to more sustainable modes of production and consumption.

My research links to SDG17 (partnerships) but I am keen to learn how it could also relate to addressing other SDGs -- this course seemed the perfect opportunity, and comes with the added benefit of practicing working on group setups after a year of solo academic work.

I tend to escape to fantasy worlds through reading and writing, often disregarding the very real world I live in, and the challenges this world faces. This course also provided a way for me to "reconnect with the real world" by engaging with people from myriad countries, connecting and collaborating with like- and different-minded towards a common goal, and grappling with topics on sustainability in a less theoretical format.

I'm Mariam (she/her). I'm 23 years old, and I was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. I'm a student at AUC, where I'm majoring in chemistry and minoring in philosophy. I'm currently in my last semester of my undergraduate degree, and hopefully I'll start my Master's degree in analytical and environmental chemistry next September.

I'm currently working on my thesis project, which is focused on synthesizing hybrid composites from waste materials for the removal of contaminants from water, with a particular focus on emerging contaminants of concern. I was really drawn to this project as it tackles several environmental concerns and SDGs, such as waste management, water scarcity and quality and contributing to the circular economy.

I’m really excited for Future17 as it offers the opportunity to work on a real-life sustainability challenge, as well as the opportunity to get to know, work with and learn from other people who are also interested in sustainability.

As for hobbies/interests, I love reading (I’m currently reading 6 books), and I enjoy sports in general, although I especially enjoy going on long walks and yoga. I speak Arabic and English, I’m somewhat familiar with French, and I’m currently (very slowly) trying to learn Dutch and Italian.

Greetings and hello! I'm Tasina, half German, half Swedish, born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. I moved to France for uni (ESSEC Business School), studied in Morocco for a semester, and now am here in Rome, doing my Erasmus at LUISS.

I am a big language nerd and write both fiction and non-fiction on the side, so the logical conclusion is that I am studying... Business, you guessed it! It makes no sense, I know. But so far, I've been enjoying my studies, especially anything related to startups and sustainability.

And that's exactly why Future 17 excited me so much! The whole project kind of reminds me of an incubator-style structure, and ever since I had the pleasure of working at an incubator-born Dutch startup called Minite two summers ago, I've been wanting to come back to this growth mindset and design thinking model.

The SDGs I'm most passionate about? Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation), because I took a mind-blowing course on what happens when communities lack access to these two super, super important things. It's quite scary, actually. Also Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities)-- I'll be starting my Masters degree in Smart Cities come this September, so this one's also close to my heart. And finally (I have no ability to keep things short, if you're reading this, did you know that it's impossible for you to hum while breathing in?) I’m from Italy, although not from the sunny, good looking and touristic Italy but from a little town in the northern, cold and foggy part of Italy :')

I currently live in Rome where I’m a second year student of the undergraduate degree in political science at LUISS.
I chose this degree because I want to be able to tackle underdevelopment and inequalities in the poorest countries of the world. That’s the reason why I’m considering the programme of social policy for development for my master’s degree.
For this reason, the SDGs I feel more passionate about are numbers 1 and 2, although every SDG is connected with one another and only by working on every one of them we can reach a sustainable development for the future.

I’ve worked as a volunteer to help homeless people in Rome and I’m currently starting a volunteering organisation that aims to better education around the world, raising awareness on the learning crisis we are facing and allowing young people from all around the world to receive a proper education, which is a key-factor to empower people in order to create a better society as a whole.

I am most interested in SDG 15, life on land. Specifically though, I am interested in the interactions between people and biodiversity. I consider myself an empathetic, curious, and open-minded person. I really enjoy sports and exercise, practicing yoga, and walking in nature. My next step will be to try climbing! Also, I love watching movies, reading books, and spending quality time with my friends.

I am a climate and human rights activist, currently a member of the local Rome group of the Fridays For Future movement since last year. That makes clear my interest in issues such as climate and social justice. The theme of sustainability and the protection of the environment has always been very close to me since I was a child.

Moreover, I am vice president and sustainability referent of "Hortensia", the first transfeminist association in the university that seeks to raise awareness among the student community on gender and inclusivity issues and to improve the policies of our university.

I am a Professor in the School of Public Leadership and Director of the Anti-Corruption Centre for Education and Training at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). My field of specialisation is contemporary issues in Public Administration with particular emphasis on ethics, leadership, gender and corruption. Hi, I am originally from Australia. I arrived in the UK in June 2022. I lecture at the University of Exeter in the Exeter Medical School on innovation and leadership in clinical health care. The work often references the UN sustainable development goals so I was keen to be involved to continue to flow from education into action in the work that I do.
I was involved primarily in research in Australia and my role in the UK does have a research arm for which I am very grateful. I love research as well as teaching.
I am very excited to be involved in the Future17 program for the first time. I am looking forward to learning alot from my team and this program. I hope to be a support where needed.
