I played Bananagrams with my tutee. At first, he didn't understand how to search for words but once he got the hang of it, he did great! He used the decoding technique I used with him in my lesson 5 where I taught him how to point to every word while he was reading out loud. My tutee pointed to the beginning letter of the word he was searching for and followed along with his finger until he formed the word. More importantly, he had a lot of fun solving the word search puzzles and he felt very proud of himself when he completed all of them!

I plan to use this as we discuss the commutative property this week!

I remember seeing kids playing this while I was in school, and I saw it open on my tutee's Chromebook earlier this week. I asked him how to play it, and he explained that you have to try to get a tile to equal 2,048. You can combine tiles when there are two of the same next to each other. It's a lot of fun (yes, I played it on my own time afterwards) and is a sneaky way to throw in addition and multiplication fact instruction!

To play this version of bingo, I made a bingo sheets with the answers to multiplication/division questions. I then read out some questions such as "12x12" or "4x4" to help my student practice her times tables in anticipation for work on factoring binomial and trinomial equations. She found the activity fun and an easy way to learn though she also found the game to be anxiety-provoking. Specifically, my tutee was afraid she was not fast enough and it recalled instances of her recent math quiz where she felt "stuck" and as if "time was running out."

It is fun to play strategically or trying one's luck.

I think it may also be useful in terms of practicing executive decisions and self-awareness practice as students may be asked to describe the reasons for the actions they take on their turn.

It involves two players strategically setting a crown card in one of 5 piles with various weapons of attack value 1-6 (lowest value card discarded, same value - both discarded), a shield (removed after being hit by any card) , and an archer (removed after attack) cards. Players take turns attacking each other's piles with top cards from one of their piles until the crown is hit by a player (winner to be).

I do vocabulary games now as a social studies teacher as part of my test prep with the students with Tier 3 terms they need to know for upcoming exams. I especially like doing a Taboo game where the students need to give each other clues so they can guess the vocab term, but can’t say certain key words. Like if the word is “Congress” they have to give clues to one student but can’t say the words “laws, government, Senate or House.” It’s a lot of fun and helps the kids work together and make unique mental associations with the terms. -Nathan Satin

Otter Rush will help my tutee think quickly and better understand exponents and how to compute them. My tutee is in a race against other otters and must quickly answer exponential questions in order for his otter to move forward. Otter Rush also uses exponents to work in reverse and solve for the exponential value and the solution.

I played Wordle with my tutee. This game involves the student coming up with six words that each have five letters and figuring out the word of the day. I chose to play Wordle as we are working to better the student's writing abilities, and this game would allow him to utilize his knowledge of vocabulary to guess the correct word. Also, it might enable him to learn some new vocabulary words within the process. He enjoyed this game but said it was tough. I told him all that matters is that you tried, and there are various five-letter vocabulary words to choose from; most people do not guess the word of the day on their first try. Using seven yellow index cards, a little bit of space between one another. As two practice rounds clap several times (maybe first time 3, second time 6). My student will step for the number of claps she hears onto the yellow brick road. Now, instead of claps, I will say short sentences. For each word, Skylar will hop on the index card. The sentences include compound words and multi-syllabic words to assess the student's understanding of whether they make up one or two words. This is a beneficial game for your tutee to do an active activity. It also practices listening abilities and differentiates the difference between words vs. syllables. As well as reviewing two-syllable words.

I used the World Archive website with my tutee to help improve their literacy / fluency but also as a fun way to build our relationship and help settle them after a long day in school. My tutee has experience with Wordle, and using the archive allows me to not only use one Wordle, but as many as we have time for in the first five minutes of our sessions. It was also nice to be able to place it on the SMARTboard and have a larger view of the word board, which made it easier to read. I found that it created a great atmosphere to begin sessions, and was helpful in focusing my tutee on our lesson about English literature. Will definitely use again!

I make my own Kahoot games for music class and can use the traditional version or the flash card version, which is better if you have just one player as we do when tutoring. I make 'name the musical instrument' games and 'name the song' or 'name the artist' games on Kahoot with popular music that they likely already know. Its like a modern day "Name That Tune". I find these work best as you can make sure all the links work, versus using a pre-made Kahoot. Since kids are watching videos all day long, I figure why not include them in my classwork from time to time.

Yes/No Post-It Review

The Yes/No Post-It Review game is a great kinesthetic activity to get students up and moving, interacting with each other, and testing their knowledge on the unit. This game is similar to Headbanz, but instead gets the students moving around the room. Here are the steps:

Students write their unit-specific review term on a post-it note.
They must then place it on the back of one of their peers.
Students then interact with each other by taking a peek at the post-it note on each others back and asking a yes/no question related to their post-it review term. (Example: Is my review term a person? Is my review term a place? Is my review term still relevant today? Etc.)
Once students think they know their review term, they should is "Is my review term ___________?"
1. If they get it correct, they can take their post-it off their back and place it on the board.
2. If they are incorrect, they must keep circulating to find the correct answer.

The objective of this activity is to make review more interactive and fun. However, it truly gets the students thinking about many different review terms as they must try and solve their own while helping a number of students with other terms. It's a true test of classroom knowledge!

A tremendous number of games ideas have already been discussed within the Padlet. In order to not repeat one, I chose hangman. Hangman is a very simple and enjoyable game that many students love to participate in. After teaching new vocabulary, (this can work within most subject areas) you can play hangman with one of the new vocabulary terms. This can serve as a fun activity that will most likely lead to better retention and comprehension of the new vocabulary for students. This can be done at the beginning or end of the class period to serve as a review.

Another game that I have been playing with my tutee occasionally is called "Time 4 MathFacts". This is not a free resource, however. Luckily for me, my tutee was using this game this past spring/summer. His father paid for the subscription. This is a hands-on game, and my tutee enjoys playing it very much. It will ask simple math questions, and you will have to type your answers in. There are a variety of different games within it. For example, one of them is for the student to type the number that they see on the screen as fast as they can. It seems to keep my tutee very engaged.

Players have to put down cards one by one and say, in this order "taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza" no matter what the card is. My thought is to share the games in a tutoring session, pick a game that the tutee likes and then the tutor and tutee can do them daily and share their results through text message. It's a fun way to extend the tutoring beyond the 2x weekly sessions.

My tutee and I are currently working on root words in Learning Lab and I happened to stumble upon this game that resembles the popular Wordle. This game gives the number of letters in the word but also gives hints using the etymology of the word. Once the student has correctly guessed the word or run out of attempts the word is revealed along with the meaning of the root, suffixes and languages that the word evolved from. I am also considering using Boggle which challenges students to make words out of a jumble of letters and using stacking blocks to give my tutee a tactile way to count out syllables.

Another teacher showed me this website awhile ago. This site lets your student practice skills in fun games. I like this site because it has skills in both ELA and Math and is broken down by topic and grade level. If you are looking for something easy to use, I would recommend this site for practicing skills. I love playing this game with my students! Each "team" (could be you and your tutee) gets a coordinate plane to plot their ships on onto. You each take turns saying a coordinate point and then plotting it onto your sheet. Last one with all their ships wins!

Something that my lead teacher and I utilize on a weekly basis in our classroom is a website called Blooket. Blooket is a game-based learning platform that allows students to answer questions, while playing exciting games. Due to the fact that it is game centered, it is highly engaging for students, and they can compete against one another to see who will finish in 1st place. There are a ton of different topics that you can have students participate in, ranging from academic ones to more fun ones (a popular one that we play in my classroom is "name that logo"). Blooket is also cool because you can track each individual student's data and progress, seeing which questions they answered correctly or incorrectly, and the level of accuracy they exhibited. Students can also see what place each of their classmates is in, which can act as a motivator for them to focus and correctly answer the questions. Overall, it's a really cool and useful tool that is a perfect resource to implement into the classroom, especially on Fridays or other days where you just don't know what to do :) -John Lopez

This game is based on prior knowledge and letter recognition. I played this at home and at work it is super fun and engaging. There is a deck of cards that have multiple topics them. The person is to pick a card from the pile and must choice between the topics that are being shown. Then everyone must take turns pressing a letter and then hitting the button in the middle for the next player to go. This has to do with recognizing the first letter of many words or shows or songs. It supports in building the vocabulary and ability to recall.

One game I can play with my tutee is “Vocabulary Match-Up Relay.” I’ll prepare cards with key words from our reading, such as memoir, verse, identity, and purpose, along with their definitions on separate cards. Yan will race to match each word to its meaning, then use it in a sentence connected to the text "Brown Girl Dreaming". To make it more interactive, I’ll time each round and track her improvement. This game reinforces reading comprehension, vocabulary retention, and quick recall while keeping the activity fun and movement-based.

The players pass it back and forth until they write a complete story. It’s a game I played in creative writing and I thought it’d be fun especially since our goals are writing-based!

A game I would play with my tutee is Two Truths and One Lie. I’ve used this before in my own classes as a first day icebreaker, and I noticed that students are more eager to interact when they get to guess another student’s or teacher’s truths and lies. In the classroom, this activity allow students to make eye contact with one another (finally!) and ask questions. I think it is a simple game to start with.

Hey. My tutee Emeri have level 1 ASD. Since she have poor math performance in skip numbers and counting, I choose a game where we will take turns saying numbers ascending but the main rule is to not say a certain number of association. Example: A number we cannot say is 8. We would go back and forth to avoid the number 8 or any number associated with it. It builds cognitive thoughts and help her with number counting.

A cool game that I found that can be played with my tutee is Battle My Math Ship. Since he is working on square roots, the problems and answers for the game could be centered around square roots. This game can help him practice simple square roots which can help him be faster when he's working on more complicated equations because he'll be able to easily identify numbers that are perfect square roots and how to solve others that are not perfect squares.

A game that would work well in tutoring is one that my current tutee (and student) loves to use in my class during the day, Jeopardy! The kids in all of my classes, but especially my student who I am tutoring have expressed how this game not only is super fun to play (Especially when I bribe them with the prize of a Jolly Rancher), but also helps with review new or even older material from the beginning of a unit. My tutee can use this in an ELA context based on what they may be reading in class or even what we are currently working on (short stories realted to main idea and theme)
