The theme for "everyday use" by Alice Walker it's always human nature to want to get closer to your heritage but its very simple to forget why you really want something. The reasoning for the theme being heritage is because in the short story Dee wanted the quilts that their grandma made from hand, and all she wanted to do is hang them up and never use them. But Mama said no because they were for maggie and because Maggie would put them to good use. "but they're priceless! she was saying now, furiously for she has a temper. Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they'd be rags. less than that! She can always make some more I said Maggie knows how to quilt. Dee looked at me with hatred. You just will not understand. the point of these quilts, these quilts!" in the example it shows that Dee wants the quilts to just hangup because they are priceless, not because she wants them for memories but for show, Maggie would put them to good use, use them the way they are supposed to be used. Dee didn't deserved the quilts, she already took two other important artifacts that mama loved. But Mama stood up to her and said she couldn't have the quilts because you don't deserve them and they are for Maggie.

It is human nature for someone to want to get closer to there heritage but its easy to go to far.

In the story dee (wangero) feels like she is entitled to something that she only wants for materialistic properties even though other people have already claimed.

When dee gets the first item she keeps trying to get more and more even though its not hers.

It's human nature to have the need to connect with your heritage. Dee shows this by wanting to take the butter churn and the quilts that were already promised to Maggie to be used daily. Dee wants to take them and use them as a trophy, or to be shown off which they weren't originally made for. Dee believes that her own mother and sister don't understand their own heritage or their family roots, but in reality it's the other way around. Dee only knows of her roots and her mom and sister understand it and respect it.

The theme of the story is being greedy leads to unwanted causes. "Can I have these old quilts?' pg 161. In the story Dee asks mom for the quilts and she says she already promised them to maggie but that didn't stop Dee when she begged and yelled about how she should get them and did not consider anyone else's feelings.

The theme for "Everyday Use" is, It is in human nature to want to find your heritage and learn about it. in the story Dee wants the quilts but Mama said that she was going to give theme to maggie when she was going to get married. Mama was going to give the quilts to Maggie instead of Dee because Dee was just going to hang them. Maggie was going to use them for herself.

The theme of the story mentions how an individual comprehends their current life compared to the traditions of their people and culture. For example in the story it says, "'Maggie can't appreciate these quilts!' she said. 'She'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use.'"
This quote supports the theme for Everyday Use because it shows how Wangero thinks she has a better way of showing off her heritage, and the way Maggie would is completely wrong.

One example supporting this theme is, "But they're priceless!" she was saying now, furiously; for she has a temper. "Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they'd be in rags.
