The Concentration camp he was sent to, Auschwitz I, was located in Poland. The countryside around the camp was fervently Pro-Polish and Anti-Nazis, and the local population was willing to do whatever it took to help them escape. Auschwitz was a part of a series of labor and extermination camps that were created by Nazis in occupied Poland. An estimated 1.1 million Jews, Homosexuals, Slavs,Gypsies, and Polish political prisoners were killed in the Auschwitz camp complex.

About Kazimierz Piechowski

Kazimierz Piechowski was a Polish boy scout, he was imprisoned in Auschwitz. Piechowski often talked about how he had the duties of moving the corpse that were executed in the prison. He was able to get the work detail because he learned German as a boy. He had told Khaleeli "The death wall was between blocks 10 and 11. They would line prisoners up and shoot them in the back of the head" He also said " Sometimes it was 20 a day, sometimes it was 10, sometimes it was more. Men, Women and Children." The concentration camp was new, so Piechowski was among the people who built it. Later in his life, Piechowski joined the nationalist partisan resistance movement and spent the rest of the war fighting Nazis. He ended up surviving the war. He then spent seven years in a society gulag for joining the Polish Home Army. He toured to recount stories of his time in a Nazi death camp until his passing in 2017 at the age of 98. He said to The Guardian "I am a scout, so I have to do my duty- and be cheerful and merry. And I will be a scout to the end of my life."
