Large companies may have distribution advantages, but they are often slow and lack conviction. Facebook’s success wasn’t due to a novel idea—similar platforms like Friendster and Myspace already existed. Despite having the talent and infrastructure, big companies failed to capitalize on social networking because they doubted new ideas. Initially, social media was dismissed as a fad or seen as unprofitable, delaying large companies' responses. By the time they recognized its potential, it was too late to compete effectively. Even when internal teams believed in the idea, decision-makers deprioritized it, adding bureaucratic hurdles that slowed progress. This hesitation—what Zuckerberg refers to as "sand in the gears"—prevents large companies from taking advantage of many opportunities. In fact, even when they have a clear advantage, they fumble about two-thirds of those opportunities. Some ideas succeed simply because they integrate seamlessly into existing distribution channels, making them “free” wins.

The traditional PSM approach asks four price-related questions, which are then evaluated as a series of four cumulative distributions, one distribution for each question. The standard question formats can vary, but generally take the following form:

At what price would you consider the product to be so expensive that you would not consider buying it? (Too expensive)

At what price would you consider the product to be priced so low that you would feel the quality couldn’t be very good? (Too cheap)

At what price would you consider the product starting to get expensive, so that it is not out of the question, but you would have to give some thought to buying it? (Expensive/High Side)

At what price would you consider the product to be a bargain—a great buy for the money? (Cheap/Good Value)

In business, we often believe success comes from efficiency, strategy, and innovation. While all of those matter, what if I told you that a $1 hotdog helped turn a restaurant into the #1 in the world?

Let me introduce you to unreasonable hospitality, the principle that transforms ordinary transactions into extraordinary experiences.

A lesson from Eleven Madison Park

Will Guidara, former co-owner of Eleven Madison Park, took a struggling NYC brasserie and turned it into the world’s best restaurant. It wasn’t just the flawless service or the meticulously plated dishes, it was something far deeper.

One afternoon, during a packed lunch service, Guidara was helping clear plates when he overheard a table of four foodies reminiscing about their New York trip. They had dined at all the top restaurants, but one regret lingered:

"The only thing we didn’t get to try was a New York City hotdog."

At that moment, a light bulb went off.

Guidara ran out of the restaurant, down the street, and bought a hotdog from a cart. Then, he rushed back to the kitchen and convinced the chef—who thought he had lost his mind—to plate it as elegantly as any fine-dining dish. The hotdog was sliced into four perfect pieces, garnished with swirls of mustard, ketchup, and delicate quenelles of sauerkraut and relish.

Before serving their final luxurious duck course, the waiter placed the hotdog in front of them.

"To make sure you don’t leave New York with any culinary regrets, a New York City hotdog."

They lost their minds.

Why it matters for you

That $1 hotdog created a $1,000 experience. It wasn’t about cost, it was about care, creativity, and connection.

Guidara called this approach unreasonable hospitality—the idea that going above and beyond in unexpected ways builds unshakable customer loyalty, brand differentiation, and long-term success.

Whether you’re launching a startup, growing a brand, or refining a service, ask yourself:

Are you just meeting expectations, or are you creating moments that people will never forget?

The businesses that succeed aren’t just the ones with the best products. They’re the ones that make people feel something.

At the heart of this iterative process lies the invaluable input from users. In this blog post, we will delve into the significance of collecting and using user feedback to improve and refine an MVP, exploring its role in the development lifecycle and how it can lead to the creation of successful, user-centric products.

Don't gamble with your future, yet that's exactly what Fred Smith did | FedEx Story

Fred Smith took a literal gamble, and you'll be glad he did. In mid-1974, a dejected Fred is standing in a ticketing queue at Chicago's O'Hare airport. He had spent the morning trying to unsuccessfully convince General Dynamics- the last straw in his investor directory to bankroll his year-old startup for the fundraise that it needed to survive.

Flashback to thirty months earlier- in 1971, Fred established his firm by infusing $4 million from his inheritance and raising an impressive $80 million in venture capital. His timing was terrible, though, and a sharp spike in kerosene prices sent the firm hurtling towards bankruptcy, losing $29 million in just 26 months.

Cutback to '74 with Fred in the ticketing queue. Flashes of all the investment rejections race through his mind. Another visual repeatedly dances before his eyes: $5000. That's the amount left in his firm's account. Not even enough to make it through the next morning. "Where would you like to fly to?", the booking agent asks. He's supposed to fly to Tennessee but as he looks up at the departure board, he notices Las Vegas. Impulsively, he books a one-way ticket to Sin City. What happens is like a film plot. He bets his final trickle of $5000 on a Blackjack table. And walks away, winning $27000.

This sum gives Fred a window of a week during which he raises $11 million. Adequate runway to expand his enterprise into a billion-dollar play that goes on to revolutionize the air transport business: 600,000 employees, 700 aircraft, presence in 220 countries, and delivering 17 million packages daily in boxes that carry the firm's name: FedEx.

How's that for a winning hand?

The word ‘startup’ has long been associated mainly with California and Silicon Valley. However, this is no longer the case as more and more locations favorable for startups spring up worldwide. Great governmental incentives, a stable economic situation, and the fact that cities like Vancouver and Toronto have become real innovation hubs.

The Origin of the Recycling Symbol

The original recycling symbol was designed in 1970 by Gary Anderson, a senior at the University of Southern California as a submission to the International Design Conference as part of a nationwide contest for high school and college students sponsored by the Container Corporation of America. The contest was a result of continuing growth of consumer awareness and environmentalism and a response to the first Earth Day.
The symbol represents a Mobius loop consisting of three-chasing-arrows in the shape of a triangle having round vertices. Each arrow twists and turns itself, and all three arrows chase each other. The symbol is a consummate representation of recycling.
The story of the recycling symbol teaches incubators a few key lessons:
1 Youth and fresh perspectives matter: The original design came from a student, not an established professional. Incubators should heavily invest in young, emerging talent because fresh ideas often come from new voices.
2 Competitions inspire innovation: The recycling symbol was born from a contest. Incubators could use similar challenges or hackathons to spur creativity among startups and entrepreneurs.
3 Tie innovation to bigger movements: The contest was aligned with the growing environmental movement (Earth Day). Incubators should encourage startups to align with powerful, relevant social trends: sustainability, AI ethics, health, etc., because that naturally builds relevance and momentum.
4 Simple, enduring design wins: The symbol is incredibly simple but powerful, that’s why it’s lasted for decades. Startups should aim for simple, clear, scalable ideas rather than overcomplicated ones.
