Theme

The theme for "Turtles All the Way Down" is finding your true self. I believe this is the theme because because Aza continues to struggle with finding who she really is or feeling like her self throughout the book. The author was trying to get across to the reader that even though it can be very hard depending on your circumstances, you can still find out who you really are and it is important to just be yourself and not to hide your emotions or feelings from other people. I feel that throughout the book, Aza is trying to hide her true personality from people and that this theme really connects to that part of the story line.

Spiral Art

"The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening, infinitely"-John Green, Turtles All the Way Down

This painting goes with the theme and quote because when Aza has her "freak out" moments she calls them spirals because they just keep going and never stop. Aza kind of connects this situation with finding her true self because she also says that trying to find he real self is difficult because it is like she is trying to find the end of an infinite spiral or the bottom of an endless pile of turtles.

"You are as real as anyone, and you 're doubts make you more real, not less."-John Green, Turtles All the Way Down

I believe that this movie, Christopher Robin, relates to this theme and quote because Christopher Robin grows up and stops believing in his stuffed animals coming to life and he goes through this journey of finding who he really was again and who he really wanted to be. He and his friends were real, but the more he started to grow up, and the less he stopped believing and imagining, the more real the world around him got and the less he liked to have fun and be his old self.

"I is the hardest word to define."-John Green, Turtles All the Way Down

In this book, Heidi has a mom who has a mental disability. She goes out of town to find more information on her mom's background so she can find out more about herself and who she, Heidi, really is. This connects to the theme, and the quote, because Heidi doesn't know a lot about herself so she has trouble finding who she really is, so she doesn't know how to "define" herself.

Who You Are-Jessie J

The lyrics are, "Don't lose who you are, in the blur of the stars
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing, It's okay not to be okay..."

This song connects to the theme because Jessie J is saying that even when you are not physically or mentally okay, you can still be yourself and find who your inner person is. Aza is always freaking herself out or saying she is not normal or okay and she is afraid to just try and be "normal". She doesn't know who she really is and she is really struggling to know.

The quote is...
"If you don't get lost, there is a chance you may never be found."-Anonymous

This quote relates to the theme because it is saying that to find who you really are you have to get lost so you can make mistakes and get back on track to know your inner personality. Aza gets very lost within herself because she is trying to know who she truly is and it gets her closer to knowing her value in life and her real self.

This movie relates to the theme of the book because Riley's world starts to fall apart around her and she struggles to know what her true self/personality is during this rough time. Her mind starts to totally shut down and she has to really try to rebuild her world and find who she really is. Aza sometimes starts to lose who she really is and her world starts to break down around her as well. She really has to work at calming down and finding who she really is just like Riley does in Inside Out.

This picture relates to the theme because Aza constantly has a spiral of thoughts going through her head and struggles to know who she really is. In this picture, the spiral represents her thoughts and how she freaks herself out, and the turtles represent her trying to find her true self. The turtles are spread out because she doesn't know and is trying to put them back in order to know who she really is. When they are all the way down in a line is when she is looking too hard to find herself, so they are spread out to try and find her real personality/self.

The quote is...
"A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it."-Jean De La Fontaine

This quote relates to the theme of the book because in this quote they are saying that when you don't try to find who you are, you ending up coming across the answer so it is easier to find yourself if you don't try so hard. Aza is finding it hard to find herself because she is trying to hard and I feel that when she starts to relax she begins to find what she really likes and what she is really like.

This book relates to the theme of my book because Lily, a young girl, is trying to find out more information about her mom so she can learn more about herself. She struggles because she never really new her mom so she doesn't know how to set her brain to keep the information without losing her sanity about how she never really knew her. Aza struggles to find herself and constantly freaks out so she has to try really hard to stay calm and make it through.
