Act ll - Injustice

In The Crucible Act ll, the group of girls accuse innocent people of witchcraft and the judges believe them. In this episode of This American Life, young police officers are sent into three different Palm Beach, FL high schools. This specific story is about a straight A student, Justin Leboy, who fell in love with one of the officers and was manipulated by his feelings to buy and sell Marijuana to her. Naomi, (her undercover name) not quite knowing how he got the pot for sure, reports he sold weed to her and later he was arrested and the scholarships he earned for college were revoked when he was contained for three days in prison. In my opinion, this is an injustice because his feelings were used against him to make the officer look good just like the girls began implicating innocent people were witches to save their small reputation in the village after being found in the forest.

In The Crucible movie, Abigail threatens the other girls that considered telling their parents about what happened in the forest. Abigail bullies them into keeping the secret and becoming the victims of witchcraft. In Halsey's "Control" she talks about the villains in her head and how she is meaner than her demons. During the last chorus, she screams, "And all the kids cried out,
'Please stop, you're scaring me' I can't help this awful energy... you should be scared of me
Who is in control?". Later on in the play, Abigail controls the girls when they are in court and once she does something the girls follow her lead, forming a mob mentality. After this moment, Abigail becomes a terrifying force in the town, anyone she pointed to or fainted around was put on trial for witchcraft.

Act lV - Helplessness

Again, John Procter is against the judges and other Salem officials in this act. He stairs down the (for lack of a better term) corrupted court and begs for his name to stay pure even if he signs away his soul, while confessing to the court. The whole act is a rollercoaster ride with ups and downs but is seems like during the entire act something is looming over our heads. The play has to end and nobody feels good. I chose the song "Devil's Gun" because it seemed like no matter what was happening in the play, there was no escape of a negative ending and everyone seemed helpless in trying to stop it.

Act lll - Man vs. Public

In Act lll, John Proctor is faced with conflicts between the public and himself when he tries to save his wife, Goodie Corey, and Goodie Nurse. Once you think he, Giles, and Francis are defeated, Mary Warren confesses to lying to the court. Although she backs out after realizing Abigail's threat was real, claiming Proctor put a spell on her to make her say that Abigail lied. I chose "The Reynolds Pamphlet", from Hamilton, in which Alexander Hamilton decides to sacrifice his reputation for his honor. Before this song, he is approached by political rivals that believe they have evidence of embezzlement against him but he reveals he was paying James Reynolds to keep quiet about the affair Hamilton had with Mariah Reynolds, his wife. John Procter sacrifices his life to end the Salem witch trials and the insane accusations going around, Hamilton sacrifices his political power for his legacy.
