The largest ports and terminals are rated by the amount of cargo tonnage transported through them each year. Other factors included the amount of containers handled or ship trips. Most ports service dry and liquid bulk carriers, break bulk cargoes (goods carried separately in bags, cartons, crates, or drums; sometimes palletized), containers, roll-on/roll-off, and passenger ships. List starts with huge seaports that handle all freight. Inland river/lake ports are listed with the river/name. LNG terminals are classed as export (when the gas is chilled to a liquid to decrease volume for shipment) or import (where the LNG is off-loaded and regasified before entering pipelines for distribution). Break bulk commodities are mostly conveyed in containers nowadays, hence the item includes a list of major container ports and their throughput measured in TEUs, a common container size. Cruise/ferry ports are important for passenger traffic. Many seaports have military vessels or port facilities as well as commercial activity.

Penang Port is a deepwater seaport in the Malaysian state of Penang. It has 5 ports in Seberang Perai and 1 in George Town in the Penang Strait. The British East India Company established Penang Island as a free port in 1786, and the Port of Penang was initially located in the port city of George Town. In 1974, the Port of Penang was transferred to Butterworth on the mainland to accommodate bigger container boats. Today, the Port of Penang is northern Malaysia's principal port and transshipment hub.

Being located close outside Kuching, Sarawak's main city and the seat of the State Government and administration, it has developed to become the state's primary port, served by various shipping lines linking it to regional hub ports.
