Hello everyone. Today, I’d like to talk about the nature of design, what happens when we fail to balance aesthetics and function, and how we can achieve harmony between the two. Design is more than just what something looks like — it’s also about how it works. Let’s explore what that really means.

2. Design is a harmony of function and aesthetics. The essence of design lies in the balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Function refers to usefulness and practicality in real life — it’s about creating something that is easy to use and well-suited for its purpose. Aesthetics, on the other hand, is rooted in visual harmony, balance, and emotional impact. It considers how a design feels, looks, and affects us. When these two are balanced, design becomes both meaningful and effective.

3. But often, we simplify design as just “making things look pretty.” In everyday life, many people reduce design to visual decoration. However, a good design must go beyond appearance. It should also have a reasonable structure and a clear, understandable function. If a design focuses only on aesthetics, it may actually confuse or frustrate users, no matter how visually appealing it is.

4. Here’s an example — the shampoo bottle that looked like Seoul Milk.

This design mimicked the shape and appearance of a popular Korean milk brand’s carton. Consumers easily mistook it for a real beverage, which caused confusion and even safety concerns. It was widely criticized and considered a failed design. This shows that good design isn’t just about how it looks — it must also work properly and make sense in real-life use.

5. So what happens when a design leans too much toward one side — either function or aesthetics? Let’s start with function-centered design. This is when a designer focuses only on purpose and efficiency, without caring much about how the product looks or how it feels to use. Some believe that as long as something works well, aesthetics will naturally follow. But that’s not always true.

6. An example of this is office furniture design during the industrial revolution.

Frederick Taylor’s Scientific Management method aimed to improve productivity by removing unnecessary elements. Desks were simplified, personal items were removed, and furniture was arranged in an orderly, unified way. While this improved supervision and efficiency, it ignored workers’ autonomy and creativity. As a result, employee satisfaction dropped, and the work environment became cold and uninspiring.

7. On the other hand, focusing too much on aesthetics can cause functional problems. A good example of this is Apple’s 2008 ultra-slim laptop, introduced by Steve Jobs. While the design was extremely thin and visually stunning, it came at a cost. It had lower hard disk capacity, slower speed, and only one USB port. Many users found it inconvenient. 1. First, I will talk about “What is Design Thinking?”
   Design Thinking is a methodology created by a company called IDEO. It consists of five stages, which I will explain later. Design Thinking focuses on viewing problems from the user’s perspective. It defines the real problem through empathy and observation. Through this process, it generates various innovative ideas and uses creative problem-solving methods to find new solutions. It also creates prototypes of ideas and continuously tests them, gradually improving the solutions.

2. Now, I will explain what IDEO is.
   IDEO is an innovative design company that developed and popularized the creative problem-solving method called Design Thinking. They believe that “everyone is creative” and provide learning platforms to help individuals and organizations unleash their creativity. Design Thinking starts with empathy, then moves on to defining the problem through observation and interviews, brainstorming various ideas, and finally creating prototypes and testing repeatedly to find the best solution. IDEO emphasizes breaking down the boundaries between designers and users to collaboratively solve problems.
   This approach is effective not only in product design but also in public projects like solving drinking water problems in developing countries or developing medical kits. The core of innovation lies in “finding solutions together.”

3. Next, I will explain the stages of Design Thinking.
   The first stage is Empathize. This stage involves fully understanding and sharing the user’s situation and cultural environment through observation and interviews, and then recording and analyzing the findings.
   The second stage is Define. To generate innovative ideas, you must discover the problem and gain insight into whether it is the real problem.
   The third stage is Ideate. After defining the problem, you need to generate many ideas to solve it. Try various design approaches to come up with ideas.
   The fourth stage is Prototype. This stage involves concretizing refined ideas to verify them. To properly evaluate, you should create prototypes in conditions similar to where the final design will be used. Through prototyping, you can demonstrate the basic design and validate its feasibility.
   The fifth stage is Test. Based on the completed prototype, this stage tests the feasibility and actual operation of the idea. Companies often conduct usability tests with prototypes.

4. I will now explain why the empathy stage is important.
   In Design Thinking, empathy is the starting point for problem-solving. By empathizing with users’ feelings and carefully observing and analyzing, you can identify the real problem and create more accurate and effective solutions.

5. Now, I will explain some examples.
   KakaoBank is a representative case of applying Design Thinking. Starting with the user-centered question, “Are digital certificates and security cards really necessary?”, they developed a contactless service through empathy, observation, brainstorming, and prototyping. This simplified the complex authentication process and transformed the financial industry with user-centered innovative services. The lack of offline branches became a new opportunity from the Design Thinking perspective, allowing them to offer affordable and efficient products, surpassing traditional banking models.

6. Market Kurly is another example of applying Design Thinking by deeply empathizing with and solving user needs.
   They started from the modern problem: “People want delicious and fresh food but have no time.” Through empathy and observation, they defined the problem and planned a new service called “Dawn Delivery.” This user-centered idea was improved through actual user feedback and successfully established. Additionally, Market Kurly grew into an experience-focused platform with strict product selection and food culture content. Now, it has evolved further using big data and curation strategies for more refined services.

7. There are three important points in Design Thinking activities.
   First, let go of preconceived notions about the problem. Don’t try to define the problem too quickly; instead, observe, empathize, and understand the core deeply.
   Second, respect diverse perspectives. Creative ideas come from different backgrounds and thoughts. Even unfamiliar opinions should be embraced and developed together.
   Third, do not fear failure. Trial and error are part of finding better solutions, and a team culture that accepts this positively is essential.
   These attitudes are the key to successful Design Thinking.

8. There are some difficulties when doing Design Thinking alone.
   First, lack of execution power. Design Thinking excels at idea generation but it is hard to systematically develop and execute ideas alone.
   Second, absence of evaluation criteria makes it difficult to objectively assess progress and results. Setting appropriate performance indicators and analyzing them alone is limited.
   Third, over-reliance on intuition. When working solo, it is easy to depend only on personal experience and intuition, limiting diverse viewpoints.
   Fourth, limitation in solving complex problems. Although Design Thinking is suitable for complex problem-solving, it’s difficult to fully address complexity alone.
   Lastly, conflicts with organizational culture can arise. Without a culture that accepts failure and experimentation, the iterative improvement process of Design Thinking may not proceed smoothly.
   For these reasons, Design Thinking is more effective when done systematically with a diverse group of people rather than alone.

9. Finally, I will talk about the conclusion.
   Design Thinking is a user-centered problem-solving method that identifies the essence of the problem through empathy and observation, generates creative ideas, and iteratively prototypes and tests them. This process has produced innovative services like KakaoBank and Market Kurly. To succeed, it is essential to discard biases, respect diverse perspectives, and not fear failure. When done alone, there are challenges such as lack of execution, difficulty in evaluation, over-reliance on intuition, limits in handling complexity, and organizational culture issues, so it is most effective when performed systematically as a team.

Reflection

I felt that Design Thinking is a process of deeply understanding people’s perspectives and emotions through empathy and identifying users’ true needs. Based on this, it finds creative solutions to make life better, which I found very impressive. Design Thinking is not just a simple problem-solving method but an important approach that enables human-centered thinking and innovation.

Let’s begin with the first philosopher: Platon. Platon believed that humans don’t truly learn new things. Instead, he argued that learning is actually remembering what we already knew before we were born. According to him, our soul already experienced perfect knowledge in the world of ideas before birth. So what we call “learning” is really the process of recalling that truth. In his dialogue Meno, Socrates demonstrates this idea by asking a young slave boy a series of questions that lead him to solve a math problem—without having been taught it.

For Platon, true knowledge cannot come from memorization alone. He believed that knowledge begins when we recognize and understand what our soul already knows. So for him, studying is not about memorizing facts, but about realizing and understanding the truth within us. Memorization is just the shell—real knowledge is the living truth inside it.

The next philosopher is John Locke. Locke believed that when we are born, our minds are like a blank slate—what he called tabula rasa. There’s no innate knowledge. Everything we know comes from experience. So, instead of just memorizing, Locke emphasized the process of gaining knowledge through sensory experiences and how we think about them.

Locke explained that knowledge is formed through sensation and repetition. Sensation is the process of receiving information from the outside world, and repetition is how we revisit and become more familiar with that information. For example, when we encounter or recall something multiple times, we begin to understand it more clearly. So true learning, according to Locke, comes not from memorizing once, but from repeated exposure and thinking about what it really means.

The third philosopher is Epicurus. He believed that all knowledge begins with the senses. We experience the world through sight, sound, touch, and so on—and these sensations stay in our minds as images. Through repeated experiences, we form consistent ideas. For instance, if you see fire many times, and each time it feels hot, then you form the idea: "Fire is hot."

Epicurus saw learning as a process: sensation → memory → repetition → understanding. It’s not enough to just see or hear something once—we have to remember it, encounter it again and again, and then we come to understand it deeply. He emphasized that learning takes time and repeated experience to truly form understanding.

Next is Descartes, who is famous for the phrase “I think, therefore I am.” Descartes believed that true knowledge comes from using our own rational thinking—thinking critically, questioning things, and examining them until we find a clear and distinct truth. He didn’t think learning was about memorizing information, but about doubting, analyzing, and reasoning with it to find real knowledge.

Now let’s move to the East—with Confucianism. Confucianism sees memorizing classical texts not as a simple skill, but as a method of self-cultivation. By repeating and internalizing works like the Analects or Mencius, people aim to become morally better. First, a cabin crew member is someone who manages passengers’ safety in the aircraft cabin and provides in-flight services.

First, many people believe it’s a job that focuses on appearance.

In dramas, movies, and advertisements, flight attendants are often shown wearing tidy uniforms, smiling brightly, and having a neat and attractive appearance.

Because of these portrayals, many people misunderstand this job as one where appearance matters the most.

Second, people think it’s a glamorous job where you can travel the world and make a lot of money.

This might be true for some large airlines with good employee benefits.

However, in reality, flight attendants often deal with long-distance flights, irregular schedules, and physical and mental exhaustion.

Third, the job is seen as a service role where you always have to smile and be kind.

Because appearance and friendliness are emphasized, some passengers don’t take flight attendants seriously, and sadly, there are even cases of sexual harassment on board, as seen in some news reports.

Now, let’s talk about what flight attendants actually do — which is much more professional and complex than many people think.

First, although providing service is important, their primary role is ensuring passenger safety.

To do this, they receive emergency evacuation training, CPR certification, and constantly work on their physical fitness.

They must always be ready to respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.

Second, it is a physically and emotionally challenging job.

According to an interview with a Korean Air flight attendant, frequent takeoffs and landings, dry cabin air, and time zone differences make the job physically demanding.

Also, constantly dealing with passengers requires a lot of emotional energy, and some flight attendants even quit due to health issues.

Third, flight attendants must handle multiple roles beyond providing service.

When a crime occurs onboard, they act like police officers.

When a passenger falls ill, they take on the role of a nurse.

They must respond quickly and flexibly to a wide variety of situations.

So then, why do I still want to become a flight attendant?

I was introduced to this job by my parents, and I naturally became interested in this career from an early age. As I explored more about the profession, I read books like The Diary of a Flight Attendant and others. Through those, I was able to learn about the daily lives and real experiences of cabin crew members.

What fascinated me the most was the airplane cabin as a unique and special space, where I could meet people going on vacations or business trips and share small but meaningful moments with them.

Even if the job is physically and mentally tough, reading real stories from flight attendants made me even more excited to pursue this dream.
