The Kambala dance, performed by the Nuba people of Southern Kordofan, Sudan, is a vibrant celebration of the harvest season. Dancers mimic the movements of cows, reflecting the agricultural lifestyle of the community. This energetic dance involves rhythmic stomping and lively music, creating a festive atmosphere. The Kambala dance is not only a form of entertainment but also a way to honour the land and its bounty. It strengthens community bonds and preserves cultural heritage, passing traditions from one generation to the next. (Nuba Survival Foundation, 2018)

Nuba Survival Foundation.

Sudanese traditional clothing is a vibrant reflection of the country’s diverse culture. Women often wear the thobe (toub), a long, colourful fabric wrap similar to the Indian sari, typically worn over a dress or shirt and skirt. Men commonly wear the jalabiya (galabiya), a loose-fitting, long-sleeved, collarless ankle-length garment, often accompanied by a turban or scarf. These garments vary in colour and design depending on the region and occasion, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Sudan (Planet Jawal, 2021).

Planet Jawal.
Exploring Traditional Medicine Practices among Sudanese Community

Traditional medicine in Sudan is deeply rooted in the culture, with a focus on herbal remedies and spiritual healing (MARIOD et al., 2023). In Sudanese culture, illness is often seen as a result of spiritual or social imbalance, and healers are highly respected in their communities. They use a combination of spiritual means and herbal remedies to restore health, rooted in the belief that physical ailments are linked to spiritual well-being. Herbal remedies, which are valued for their medicinal properties and symbolic significance, are used to treat various ailments. Certain herbs are believed to fight against evil spirits and some to bring good fortune (Queensland Health Multicultural Services, 2011). Spiritual healing involves rituals and prayers to address the spiritual causes of illness, emphasising the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit (MARIOD et al., 2023). Understanding these practices is crucial for healthcare providers working with Sudanese refugees, as it builds trust, improves communication, and enhances the effectiveness of medical treatments.

MARIOD, A., ELRASHEED, H., & AGAB, M.
Common Health Issues Among Sudanese Refugees

Sudanese refugees face numerous health challenges upon arrival in Australia; common health concerns include malnutrition, infectious diseases, mental health issues and injuries (Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2018). Among the said health issues, mental health is a significant concern, as many refugees have experienced severe trauma, leading to PTSD, depression, and anxiety (Queensland Health Multicultural Services, 2011). Trauma-informed care is recommended for addressing mental health issues in Sudanese refugees. This approach involves creating a safe environment, building trust, empowering patients, and respecting refugees' cultural backgrounds and experiences (NSW, 2022). By focusing on these health concerns and implementing appropriate treatment options, healthcare providers can significantly improve the health outcomes of Sudanese refugees in Australia.

Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide.
The Impact of Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on Sudanese Refugees in Australia

The World Health Organisation (WHO) emphasises the importance of social inclusion and non-discrimination in promoting health and well-being among Sudanese refugees in Australia (World Health Organization, 2024). Social inclusion and non-discrimination foster a supportive environment, reducing mental health risks and encouraging refugees to engage in community activities, alleviating feelings of isolation and loneliness (Losoncz, 2018). Non-discrimination policies guarantee equal healthcare access for refugees, addressing both physical and mental health needs, as discrimination can deter individuals from seeking help (Mahoney & Siyambalapitiya, 2017). Inclusive communities offer crucial support networks for refugees, enabling them to navigate resettlement challenges such as housing, employment, and education, ensuring long-term health and stability (Chia, 2019).

World Health Organization.

For me, the most important aspect of Domain 1: Clinical Expert was the standard competency 1.2. Having learned that recognising and addressing the impact of trauma is not just about clinical skills but also about empathy and understanding, I now realise that by integrating trauma-informed care into my practice, I will be able to provide holistic care that acknowledges the complex experiences of refugees and support their journey towards healing and recovery (Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). This knowledge is essential to me in my future career as a nurse in creating a culturally safe and welcoming environment where refugees will feel secure and respected under my care.

Migrant and Refugee Women’s Health Partnership.
