Building on the skills they learned first semester in a controlled environment I have now added in a scaffolding of choices for the students to complete the sketchbook homework on their own time. They can choose from a pre-provided list, they can be inspired by an idea box, they can come up with their own choices and there is a list of limitations for unacceptable work as well. 3) students are able to pace themselves within a given week, but are given a determined endpoint that they must reach by the end of the week
4) choose to meet 1-on-1 for grading conferences in order to receive extra feedback and ask questions outside of class during open mods. Students can use the pre-organized template, sticky notes in their book (highly popular), they can keep a running document of their choice, they can make notes in "Preview" of the PDF, or even use a lined notebook. All that matters to me is that they're reading and thinking about the text.
