Audio Source: https://youtu.be/ma3GGPHr3co?si=8RB9JVLfbk8XRXC6

In this listening class, I learned how to plan a trip in English from beginning to end. The audio was from a lesson by Hello English, where two speakers, Leo and Maya, talked about organizing a weekend getaway. Through their dialogue, I was able to understand how English speakers naturally communicate when making plans. They discussed choosing a destination, comparing options, suggesting activities, and arranging practical details like transportation and accommodation. Listening to them helped me notice not only the vocabulary they used but also the tone and expressions that made their conversation sound polite and natural.

The lesson started with choosing a destination. The speakers compared two places, the mountains and the beach, using comparative adjectives like “closer,” “cheaper,” and “more adventurous.” From this part, I learned how to express opinions and preferences in a polite way. For example, they said, “The mountains are closer than the beach,” and “The mountains might be cheaper.” These simple phrases showed me how to sound natural and considerate when discussing different options.

I also learned how to make suggestions and find compromises when people have different ideas. Leo and Maya used phrases such as “We could go hiking” and “How about a picnic?” to make suggestions without sounding too direct. When they disagreed, they did it politely by saying, “I’d rather go hiking” or “I’m not so sure.” They then found a middle ground by combining both ideas, deciding to hike in the morning and have a picnic in the afternoon. This part of the conversation taught me how to express opinions and reach agreements in English conversations, which is an important communication skill.

Another useful part of the lesson was when they talked about transportation and accommodation. They compared driving and taking the train, mentioning that the train is more relaxing but driving offers more flexibility. They also discussed staying in a hotel, an Airbnb, or a guest house, and used the phrase “within our budget” to talk about money. From this, I learned several helpful travel expressions such as “book accommodation,” “finalize the details,” and “a good alternative.” These are phrases I can actually use when planning trips or talking with others about travel plans.

Elga Mawarni Santoso

2024 A

2405086005

I've selected the YouTube video "How to Plan a Corporate Event Like a Pro (Even If You're a Complete Beginner)" as a helpful listening source. While there are many excellent podcasts about professional event planning, a YouTube video often includes visuals and a more conversational style which can be engaging for listening practice.

I would use this source for my listening practice in the following way:

- Initial Listening for Gist: I'd listen to the entire video once without subtitles to understand the main points and overall structure of the corporate event planning process. This helps to train my ear to the speaker's accent and pace.

- Detailed Listening with Note-Taking: I'd listen a second time, pausing frequently to jot down key vocabulary related to event planning (e.g., vendor evaluation, budget management, timeline creation, corporate offsite), as well as the main steps or frameworks mentioned, such as the "4S Framework."

- Active Repetition and Shadowing: I'd replay short segments, particularly when the speaker is giving specific advice or defining a term, and try to repeat what they say out loud, matching their intonation and speed (a technique called shadowing). This helps to improve pronunciation and speaking fluency.

- Transcription (Optional but beneficial): For a particularly challenging section, I might try to transcribe a short, 1-2 minute segment word-for-word. Then, I'd check my transcription against the closed captions (if available) to identify and correct any words or phrases I misheard.

This process moves from general comprehension to highly focused listening, building both vocabulary and active speaking skills relevant to office planning activities.

This video on how to plan a corporate event like a pro is relevant as it provides practical, real-world advice and vocabulary about organizing office-related activities like parties, retreats, and meetings.

https://youtu.be/XW17Az8lRVM?si=2LHvFob0ZHFNK0Np

Plans are internal and controllable, while strategies must take into account competitors, markets, and customers. A good strategy is not just a collection of activities, but interconnected decisions that are clear, simple, and testable. In essence, without the right strategy, a plan is just a list of activities without a path to victory.

Like for examples “Michael has asked pam and me to dinner at least nine times” this sentence is a present perfect tense that use to say about something that already happened. And then idiom like “I just got off the horn with the corporate” which means just finished calling the corporate. And how do I use this video to learn about grammar and language, so I take a note to some words and trying to say it to shadowing my pronunciation with the character.

I would use the video to master the function of giving instructions and sharing tips, by analyzing and adopting the speaker's use of transitional phrases like "Step one is to..." and "A little tip here is to make sure...". For vocabulary, I would extract common, context-specific phrases related to family life, holidays, and planning. Finally, the video is valuable for listening practice and pronunciation, allowing me to sharpen my comprehension of spoken English, particularly the Scottish accent, by using techniques such as shadowing the speaker’s rhythm and intonation.

First, I focused on vocabulary, and I wrote down some useful words and phrases about planning and productivity like "structure your day," "execution," and "checklist." I also paid attention to the language functions; the speaker is great at giving advice, so I listened to how he introduces his tips with phrases like "Here are some tips to..." and "The most important thing you can do is...". This is really helpful for when I need to give clear instructions or suggestions. Finally, I practiced my pronunciation by repeating some of the key sentences after him, trying to copy his intonation and stress to sound more natural and confident when I speak.

Name: Muhammad Rifki Rachman

Student ID: 2405086063

Class:B

The video, "How to be Organized at Work: 8 Tips to Increase Productivity," explains eight key tips for improving your organization and productivity in the workplace.

Here is a summary of the tips provided:

1. Use To-Do Lists Write down important tasks and organize them based on priority, such as listing the top three must-do tasks first. You can also color-coordinate tasks by urgency.

2. Use a Planner Use a written or digital planner to keep track of your progress, note upcoming meetings, and set goals to keep them at the forefront of your mind.

3. Manage Your Time Know how long tasks take you so you can allocate specific time to them, which helps you achieve more during your workday. [

4. Learn to Delegate If you have too much work, delegate tasks to colleagues best equipped to handle them. Matching the work to people's skills ensures higher quality work in a reasonable time.

5. Be an Early Bird Create a great morning routine that involves waking up early, allocating time for a workout or self-care, and making you motivated to work hard.

6. Limit Distractions Keep common distractions like your phone out of sight, and consider muting Slack or email notifications to stay focused on one task.

7. Keep a Tidy Environment A clean and tidy workspace makes your work more efficient, prevents distraction from mess, and avoids wasting time looking for things you need.

8. Take Regular Breaks Give yourself a period of time (e.g., 40 minutes) to work, followed by a short 5-10 minute break to recharge and refocus. Use this time to get up and move if you have a sedentary job.

https://youtu.be/EhLhE8865tU?si=0cUFTp-z9kPnOSq6

The video is about how the creator, Rebekah Joy, manages her day by keeping healthy habits, staying consistent, and making time for self-care and hobbies. She explains simple and realistic ways to balance work and life, like planning her day, making sleep a priority, and starting small with new habits. The video uses clear everyday English, so it is good for learning how to speak about daily activities, work routines, and staying organized in life.

What I can also learn from this video, is how the speaker frequently uses the personal pronoun "I" as the subject to talk about her daily habits and routines. The video also demonstrates varied verb forms with "I" in present simple tense to describe routines ("I get up," "I plan," "I spend"). Additionally, the speaker sometimes contrasts with "she" or "they" when talking about others, showing how subjects and pronouns change with different people.

The conversation helps me understand how people naturally talk about travel and adventure, including how they share experiences, make plans, and express opinions. By listening carefully, I can learn to catch the main ideas, details, and even the feelings or attitudes behind what the speakers say. The video also introduces useful vocabulary related to travel, such as destinations, activities, and experiences, helping me expand my word choice when I talk about trips. It’s also a good way to get used to different accents, natural speaking speed, and common expressions. Practicing with this kind of listening helps me become more confident in understanding everyday English conversations and using the new words and phrases in my own speaking or writing.
