The third Tuesday in March was declared Bank Day in Virginia by the Virginia General Assembly in 1991. On this day, Virginia high school seniors learn about banking, financial services, career opportunities in the industry and the vital role banks play in their communities. 

Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; medicine and health sciences; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering.

Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.

To help support student academic and career planning, the top 100 professions in the Commonwealth by median pay and the education, training, and skills required for each profession, and the top 10 degree programs at institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth by median pay of program graduates have been updated:

The University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service in collaboration with the VDOE has researched and compiled this data for the 2024-25 school year. The information is based on occupational employment statistics and educational attainment data produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as longitudinal wage data produced by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.  

The program is sponsored by a grant from the Teagle Foundation and is offered free of charge (including program costs, room and board, field trips, supplies and materials) to participating students. Upon successful completion, each student will receive two college credits and letter of recommendation from a Bridgewater College faculty member. Admissions preference will be given to students who would benefit from additional support in understanding the American college experience, such as first-generation and low-income students.

Hollins University invites you to Hollinsummer, a pre-college experience designed for rising 9th–12th grade women who are eager to explore their academic interests, develop new skills, and experience college life on our beautiful Roanoke, Virginia campus.

Students can choose from three immersive programs:

Creative Writing Intensive – Develop a distinctive voice through fiction, poetry, and personal narrative workshops led by published authors.

Science Seminar – Conduct hands-on research in chemistry and environmental studies, exploring topics ranging from ecology to climate change.​​​​​

 Riding Program – Advance hunter/jumper skills and learn from college-level instructors while riding Hollins’ nationally recognized horses. Two one-week programs*: July 12–18, 2026; July 19–25, 2026
