Great Stink?

Yes, Paris really did stink in the 1800s

The Great Stink of Paris and the Nineteenth-Century Struggle against Filth and Germs by David S. Barnes gives great background information about the era Grenouille's story takes place in and the Great Stink of Paris.

David S. Barnes’s history of the birth and dissemination of public health in France. The author shows that scientific discovery alone did not change the way a nation understood sanitation and the spread of disease. Eberth and Klebs's isolation of the typhoid bacillus (1880), Roux’s diphtheria antitoxin (1884), Pasteur’s work on anthrax (1881) and development of the rabies vaccine (1885) were the talk of the town, but that wasn't enough. It took a convergence of ideas (new scientific knowledge, persistent folk etiologies of contagion, a shift in political thinking toward Republican positivism, increased secularization, France's mission to "civilize" the peasantry and colonies) to garner acceptance of germ theory and support for sanitation control.

- Henri Bouley: "Tout ce qui pue ne tue pas, et tout ce qui tue ne pue pas" ('All that stinks does not kill and all that kills does not stink").

Link to the text:
The author directly mentions just how badly Paris stank (during the time period in which Perfume takes place) and makes sure to emphasize it numerous times throughout the early stages of the book.

If you want to read more, click on the link below. Suskind did take courses in 18th century history and its likely he may have taken aspirations from Manuel's actions.
Link to text:
Manuel was known to be Spain's first serial killer (similar to how Grenouille is a prominent serial killer in France) who killed people to extract their fat to turn into soaps (similar to how Grenouille extracted scent from people's bodies). Suskind has stated that for post-Hitler Germans Perfume’s allegorical message should be clear enough. Mr. Suskind has said that French and Anglo-Saxon critics seemed to grasp better than German ones the political allegory lurking in his morbid tale. ''Some French critic said it was a typical German book,'' he observed. ''There is something to that.'' The Third Reich (🤬 germany), he continued, ''was for my generation always in the back of our minds.''

By portraying the post-Hitler era of despondency in his generation, he hints at the idea that many of his works, including Perfume is influenced by the events that occurred during the Third Reich.

Through Perfume, Suskind establishes parallels amongst both Hitler and Grenouille with both characterized as "abominable" people.
Relationship Between Odor and Memory

Odor (particularly that of a human) is a powerful memory-triggering agent.“Human scent is like an olfactory cocktail,” says Rabeau, and “what you eat, where you come from, if you smoke, what products you put on your skin” are all part of our scent identity . In addition to sight, sound, or touch, Rabeau claims smell and the memories associated with it can create a rounder picture of the person or event someone is remembering—like an olfactory photograph. Article explores how companies have tried to create human scents, for the most part to keep the memory of lost loved ones alive as best as possible.
