Verify sources: Before accepting information as true, check the source and make sure it's credible. Look for information from reputable news outlets, verified accounts, or well-respected individuals in a particular field.

Diversify your sources: Try to expose yourself to a range of viewpoints and opinions on a given topic. Follow accounts or hashtags that represent a variety of perspectives, not just those that align with your existing beliefs.

Fact-check: Use fact-checking tools or websites to verify the accuracy of information before sharing it. Be especially wary of posts that seem too good (or bad) to be true or use exaggerated language.

Engage critically: Don't just accept information at face value. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and seek out additional sources to deepen your understanding of a topic.

Be mindful of bias: Social media algorithms are designed to show you content that aligns with your existing beliefs and preferences. Be aware of this bias and actively seek out opposing viewpoints to broaden your perspective.

Take breaks: It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information on social media. Take breaks from time to time to clear your head, refocus, and maintain a healthy balance in your use of social media.

By following these ways, you can engage in more effective information seeking on social media platforms, gain a better understanding of different perspectives, and make informed decisions based on accurate information.

Lucas Siu Chun Hin, Kwok On Ki, Andrew Chung Wing Hei

Liu Haohua
Liu Yunshu
Yu Kefan
Cheung Hoi Lun
Lu Yuehan
NI Yuanjun
1. Associated Search: Keyword association: When a user enters a keyword in the search box, the system will suggest a description of similar keywords under the search box. This effectively facilitates the step of articulating the information needs of users in the information search process. This feature also facilitates users to passive search for information.
2. Tag/Group/Topic: Social media has enabled people with similar interests or concerns to discuss them under common community or topic tags. After following these topics or joining interest groups, content of interest to the user is frequently tweeted, which triggers searches for related topics. By searching for a topic or group or tag, searchers can get information under that topic or in interest groups. And the information in these interest groups tends to be of higher quality, with more valid information.
3. Subscription: During the process of using social media, we often subscribe to or follow content creators of interest to get continuous updates on content of interest. Subscribing to content creators is a type of ongoing searching to update or expand knowledge previously acquired by other methods on a topic. Thus social media also supports our ongoing search.
4. UI/UX design: Mobile-friendly, many people access social media through their mobile devices, so a good UI/UX design should be optimized for mobile devices, making it easy to access information on the go. The design of the application that users only need to swipe or drag that can easily get the latest information even that might not be their need for that one indeed. That facilitate the passive attention and passive search.

5. Recommendation system
The common platform will calculate the categories that users are likely to be interested in based on their habits, so as to select the content that users will click on for recommendation. Sometimes the content is not limited to the category of the user's historical content, for example, when the user searches for travel tips on the platform, the platform may recommend some travel goods reviews. So social media can increase passive search.
6. Filter/advanced search: By adding the function of filter to the search strategy of social media, the search can be further narrowed down in the process of active search, and more refined results can be obtained from the vast redundant information of social media. For example, on creative sites users can filter by update time, number of comments, number of likes, and language category. on life sharing platforms users can search by pets, work, academics, etc.
7. Interaction (comment/thumb up/repost)
According to Information Seeking Processes, the interaction function of social media would promote the examination of the search results. For example, users can evaluate the information by comment, thumb up, and repost features. The other users might use the number of comments, thumb up and repost to filter and select valuable information sources.

I would like to know how do you think of getting diverse point of view at social media platform. Since social media platforms have faced criticism for their content moderation policies, with some arguing that they are biased or censoring certain viewpoints. This has led to debates about the limits of free speech online and the role of social media platforms in shaping public discourse. Therefore, in this case the social media itself have already be controversial by its policy setting. Thank you very much.

Cheung Hoi Lun Helen
