I live in a suburb close to the city (Pascoe Vale South) and live close to a local park. Not many people are aware of the wildlife living in this park, like lizards and birds. I want to make park goers more aware of local wildlife, and in turn make them more aware of how keeping cats indoors benefits wildlife. I'll start with a survey to people who have gone to the park, and ask them how often they see a certain species at the park. Then, I'll put up posters saying something along the lines of 'did you know, this species lives here?'. Then, I'll talk about how native species are declining by cats. I'll say, 'if you want to see more wildlife, try keeping your cats indoors.' I might gain the help of my local mp to aid in putting signs up about the local wildlife, as I think that's very important to gain people's connection and understand as to why keeping cats indoors are good. Id be happy to gain any feedback

My plan is to put up posters around my school, warning people of the risks of free roaming cats, and the benefits to keeping them indoors, and as an alternative to free roaming them, harness training them. In this poster I would also include links to safe cat, safe wildlife so they can look further into how to enrich their cats, and also include links to recourses on how to train a cat to walk in a harness. I chose my school because it’s a place where I can easily access people who I know own cats, I could also possibly take these posters to local pet shops

A bit of backstory, I live in the Northern Metro area, not too far from the airport. Our school is located on an old farm where we still have animals but also a very important wildlife corridor that the school has been, and continue to, revegetate and help thrive. Being the Environmental/Sustainability Captain, the title has also been useful in getting projects through.

With the help of amazing teachers, we have introduced bird nest building as part of the secondary school STEAM program where students can opt in and help create these boxes for our wildlife. Challenges you may find is teacher commitment and lack of equipment/resources for this project.

Having the critically endangered Golden Sun Moth on our property, we have planted a garden specific to this species, using native grasses they eat right next to the creek that goes through our school as well as education of the animal already in our agriculture curriculum. I encourage anyone to learn and know the species that may inhabit your school and try to preserve them no matter the conservation status. Creating habitat can be planted in one day however growth is needed to fully encourage animals to the area.

The school runs a family science night every year. Last year I held a stall talking about ocean acidification, talking to children and their parents of what can happen to marine animals, especially invertebrates and their shells. The 'experiment' was to have shells put into different pH solutions, with 1 being vinegar which would be cloudy from the disintegrating shells that we have in storage. Any attendees were able to try break a shell from the normal water (7.0pH), the oceans pH (~8.0pH) and vinegar (~2pH) which only the vinegar shells braking 90% of the time.

If you are studying Environmental Science in VCE you will have your Student Design Investigation to do if you have not done already. For my project I looked at bird species and their concentrations in certain areas, the school plaza, the farm and the wildlife corridor with an obvious 'winner'. I encourage to only survey animals in your study, however if you do not have the facilities, resources or locational availability it may be difficult to conduct your investigation on animals.
