I decided to select research strand and focus on the goal of studying a writer’s work at drawing from research to build her story-world because Atwood said she all the event of the book had happened before even though it seemed very dystopian. I was very curious of what inspired handmaid's Tale and how Atwood uses it in her story

Task 10 was focused on the gender aspect of the novel. I thought that gender segregation plays a major role in Gilead so I decided to choose this task to understand why Atwood focuses so much on gender roles. I learn that because of the gender discrimination Atwood observed around her, she writes Gilead as an extreme exaggeration of the issue to warn readers about not taking gender equality for granted

Task 9 was about the use of Biblical reference in the novel. When I first read the novel, I never realised that there were biblical references and only learnt of it in class. Therefore I choose this task to help me understand how Atwood draws from a source like the bible and why did she incorporate religion into the novel.

I learnt that Atwood made Gilead a religious state because she wanted to warn about the misuse of religion as a tool to control people. She once again uses exaggeration to bring her message to readers.

After understanding the use of biblical references, I choose to do task 13 which is the use of ideology as I wanted to know other then the misuse of religion, how else is Gilead connected to other totalitarian government.

I learnt that many other events in Gilead parallels that of totalitarian government in the past. Totalitarian government have in common the way they control people by taking away people's liberty and enforcing a hierarchy. They also objectify people and people as not humans but a tool to the state.

After doing the tasks, I am able to better appreciate Atwood’s work and the skill she has in incorporating real event into the story to bring across a message. I also never thought of doing that as a fictional writer. It amazes me that she drew inspirations from so many sources across many time periods.

The task helped me understand the Atwood’s choices on how to draw from sources, such as language and events. I learnt that the way Atwood brings across her message is through exaggeration of real life events and issues. This makes to readers consider the extreme reality and the realization would also leave an impact on them. I think through all the task I did, help me reach closer to my goal as I am able to explore different historical aspect of her work.
