Most Indonesians speak at least two languages: Indonesian and a local language. On this padlet, I would like to share some multicultural materials for high school students whose L1 is Indonesian + a local language (or a non-dominant language) and L2 is English. In this book, Naela Ali (an Indonesian woman living in Jakarta, Indonesia) integrates poems written in English and illustrations. Some quotes from this book that promote students' choice/agency in their learning process include:
- Let your imagination grow as big as possible.
- Sometimes you don't want to do things. And please, be brave enough to say no.
- Sometimes you don't always need to be neat. You can colour outside the line too, you know?
Q3: I plan to use this material in an English class. It is an example of a non-mainstream content because though the content is in English, it is written by an Indonesian---this will help students to value non-mainstream content and inspire them that they can also contribute to their community.
After reading the book, students will make: 1) their own poems or short prose about their goals and dreams and 2) an artwork to express their poems or prose. The artwork could be a painting/  sketch/ sculpture/ video/ song/ anything that the student would like to explore.
Q4: Students will learn to explore themselves especially their goals and dreams. They will learn to take agency over their learning by choosing which type of art through which they would like to express themselves.

Q3-4: From this TV series, I hope that students will learn that their home language matter and an important part of their culture and identity. All teachers and school staff work together to create a school culture that provides all students with equitable access to education.

Bumi Manusia (or This Earth of Mankind) is a historical fiction about Minke, the first Javanese boy who attends a Dutch colonial high school. He critically observes and bravely challenges the power and racial injustice that threaten his life and relationship with Annelies, a half-Javanese and half-European girl.
Q3: I plan to use these materials in English and/or Indonesian language classes. Students will read the English and/or Indonesian versions of the novel as well as watch the movie. As they're reading and watching, they will observe, analyze, and then make connections: text to self, text to text, and text to world.
Students will ponder some essential questions which include:
- Looking at the injustice that the story portrays, can you think of current issues of injustice particularly in your community?
- What are some possible causes of those issues?
- What is one concrete action you could do to promote social justice in your community? What are some challenges or opportunities that may arise as a result of your action?
Q4: Students will learn to think critically about the issue of injustice in their community and take actions to promote social justice.

Note: In the novel, almost all of the texts are written in Indonesian (or English). Imperfect the Series tells the stories of four young women who live in the same kost (a house with several bedrooms to rent). Neti is a make up artist;  Prita is a video gamer; Maria is a Christian and the 9th child of 11 children; Endah is a Muslim who loves Kpop (Korean music). The four ladies support and also fight against one another. Despite their differences, they respect and love one another as they deal with various life issues.
The TV series does an excellent job in integrating comedy and content that promote positive relationships among people from different backgrounds.
Q3: I plan to use this material in a drama class. After watching 1-2 episodes of the series, students will work in groups (3-4 people) to create a role play. They will write a script, practice, and perform. The role play should tap into the issues of how people from different backgrounds can respect one another and work together to support one another as well as make positive contributions to society.

Q3: I plan to use this material in a social studies class especially during lessons related to relationships. Students will listen to this podcast and then reflect on their own lives: 
- Have they ever faced similar experiences? 
- Or have they ever had stereotypes against others? 
Then students can have discussions about their experiences and how they can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment in their classroom/ school/ community. 
Q4: Students will learn to understand the struggle of others who face stereotypical challenges as well as how to respect one another.

This Medok podcast belongs to Christian Aditya who is in his early 20s and was born in Surabaya. In his podcasts, Aditya shared his experiences and struggles by using his medok accent. Medok is an accent that is usually a characteristic of people who live in Central Java and East Java, Indonesia.
In this episode, he interviewed Elisabeth Glory, a Chinese-Indonesian woman in her early 20s, who speaks up regarding political and social issues on social media. She focuses on reducing prejudice against Chinese-Indonesians. She lives in Surabaya, Indonesia, and also has a medok accent.

Q3 (1): I plan to use this material in a social studies class to discuss racial stereotypes and what we can do to reduce them. Students will listen to the podcast, take notes, and share what they learn in small groups. Then, they will look at Elisabeth Glory's Instagram account (@elisabethglory)---or other social medial influencers---and think of how they can use social media to promote positive perspectives toward race.
Q4 (1): Students learn to develop positive perspectives toward race and inspire others.

Q3 (2): I plan to use this material in a speaking class (English or Indonesian). Personally, I grew up in Surabaya, and I have a medok accent. I used to feel embarrassed when I talked to other people who weren't medok because they would make fun of me. I heard people say (to someone else), "She looks pretty but she is medok." Moreover, a few weeks ago one of my students asked me to teach her to remove her accent when speaking English. Thus, I would share this podcast with my students and have discussions on what they think about accent and how we can develop appreciation and respect toward other people who speak different accents.

Then, students will create a short picture book or comic of their family traditions. Students are encouraged to use their home languages.
Q4: Students will learn more and appreciate their family cultures as well as other families' cultures.
