A community is a group of people who help one another and provide a sense of belonging to an individual. Humanity has always had a propensity to seek out connections with other human beings. </div><div>Within Frederick Douglass' memoir is where I found the importance of community. Douglass emphasizes the idea of belonging when he describes how without a sense of fellowship the slave children fought among themselves for food rather than sharing.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This picture represents the gradual dehumanization of humanity. In describing what characteristics make the members of humanity it is important to note what it means to take those away from a member of humanity.&nbsp;</div><div><br>When I thought about the loss of humanity I described how it is sometimes viewed as becoming a monster without thinking about how it is put into practice.<br>Dehumanization was an important topic of discussion within the literature we read this semester that touched on slavery.</div>]]></description>

Dehumanization tears someone apart and dehumanization puts them back together. Originally I only thought how humanity is lost and not how one could regain it.&nbsp;</div><div><br>Rehumanization is the process of regaining once lost humanity. One example of this is in Harriet Jacob's memoir where she addresses his inability to prevent her master from&nbsp; raping her. Jacob's regained control of body by choosing when and with whom she had a child with.</div>]]></description>

My first attempt at this assignment was comprised of several thoughts I had while thinking about humanity and what it means to be human. An important thing to keep in mind is that with a concept as vague as humanity, many people will have different definitions of it. One of the aforementioned traits is the ability one has to care or empathize for others. When thinking about this idea of selflessness I went to the act of giving away material things.<br><br>The Irish boys by the dock in Douglass' narrative are a good example of this ability to care for another. Douglass describes them as being genuinely sad for him when they learn he is to be a slave for life. They treat him&nbsp; as a friend and help him learn to read.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Some philosophers, such as Immanuel Kant, believed that humans had a natural predisposition for evil. The above is a cartoon deception of animal cruelty an extremely heinous act.</div><div><br>While I previously mentioned the horrible things humans I always described it as dehumanizing. In other words, it is the opposite of humanity. However, there are those that believe it is a part of every human or in other words a part of humanity.<br>Poe visits this idea The Black Cat where the narrator commits a terrible act becuase it is terrible</div>]]></description>
