Within Frederick Douglass' memoir is where I found the importance of community. Douglass emphasizes the idea of belonging when he describes how without a sense of fellowship the slave children fought among themselves for food rather than sharing.

When I thought about the loss of humanity I described how it is sometimes viewed as becoming a monster without thinking about how it is put into practice.
Dehumanization was an important topic of discussion within the literature we read this semester that touched on slavery.

Rehumanization is the process of regaining once lost humanity. One example of this is in Harriet Jacob's memoir where she addresses his inability to prevent her master from  raping her. Jacob's regained control of body by choosing when and with whom she had a child with.

-Underhill focused on the freedom of thought, 
-Douglass described his regaining of masculinity and his gaining the ability of expression
-Baglioni believes that Beatrice must be devious because she is poisonus 

While I previously mentioned the horrible things humans I always described it as dehumanizing. In other words, it is the opposite of humanity. However, there are those that believe it is a part of every human or in other words a part of humanity.
