Upon that, Mexico closed Texas borders to settlers due to disobedience of Mexican laws. Texas declared independence from Mexico which lead to the Battle of San Jacinto then the Texas Revolution finally ended. After winning independence from Mexico, Texas asked the Union to be admitted as a state. The North voted no because they believed that admitting another slave state into the union would cause an imbalance of power between slave states and non-slave states in congress. Many also feared that a war would arise with Mexico because Mexico did not fully acknowledge Texas as independent.
