The man in the water was courageous and selfless. He sacrificed his life, knowingly, in order to save the lives of fellow passengers. He slowly froze in the cold water of the river, watching everyone else being safely rescued. In Homer's epic poem, however, Achilles decides that he is too angry with Agamemnon to fight with his companions. He knows that he will die in honor if he stays in battle but instead chooses to sit in a tent, watching his friends die. Not only does he choose not to participate in the Greek cause, he even arranges for Zeus to help the Trojans defeat the Greeks. His actions were completely selfless and noble. Similar to the man in the water, Achilles was warned by his mom that once he tries to kill Hector, he is going to die. Achilles understands that death is going to be the result of his actions, but he thinks fighting his heart out is
