It’s a basic tangle and probably the first one taught in any Zentangle class.

You can vary Crescent Moon with shading and striping (filling in alternate areas with solid ink or shading) and also change up the ladybug/moon shapes a bit if you really fancy bending the tangle.

It’s a core Zentangle®-original tangle and the creative possibilities for variations are mind-boggling.

Once you get into the rhythm of drawing each S-stroke using the take-off-and-land technique, it does sort itself out. Just don’t take your eyes away! And as Maria often advises, remember to turn your tile.

Hollibaugh is pronounced “haul’-a’-baw”.

This tangle starts in the foreground and works toward the background by drawing subsequent lines behind the first lines you’ve drawn, Zentangle®’s classic “drawing behind” technique.

Hollibaugh is a great tangle pattern with lots of potential for variants in lines, shading, and shapes used in the “background”.

Get comfortable, take a few deep breaths and feel gratitude and appreciation – for this beautiful paper, for these wonderful tools, for this opportunity to create something beautiful.

We teach beginning Zentangle Method with beautiful museum grade cotton paper, 3.5 inches (89 mm) square. To answer a familiar question of what to put on this beautiful paper, place a light pencil dot in each corner, about a pen's width from the edges. Now it’s no longer a blank piece of paper.

Connect those dots with a light pencil line, straight or curvy, to create a square. This is your border.

Inside the border, draw a light pencil line or lines to make what we call a "string." The string separates your tile into sections, in which you draw your tangles. A string can be any shape. It may be a curvy line that touches the edge of the border now and then, or series of straight lines that go from one side of the border to the next.

A tangle is a predefined sequence of simple strokes that make up a pattern. Draw your tangles in pen inside (usually) the pencil strings and borders. Tangle is both noun and verb. Just as you dance a dance, you tangle your tangles. Draw your tangles with deliberate strokes. Don't worry about what it's going to look like. Just focus on each stroke of the pen as you make it. Trust that you'll know what to do next when the time to do it comes. There is no up or down to Zentangle art so feel free to rotate your tile in any direction that is most comfortable for your hand as you draw.

Add shades of gray with a graphite pencil to bring contrast and dimension to your tile. The black and white two-dimensional tangles transform through shading and appear three-dimensional. You can also use a tortillion (a paper blending stump) to soften and blend the graphite.

This is art you created. You should sign it. Put your initials on the front (many people create a unique monogram or chop for this step). On the back, place your name, date, comments and observations.

Hold your tile at arm’s length. Turn it this way and that. Appreciate what you just created.

I found this useful website that has a list of tangle patterns and their instruction. I drew a few by following the steps.

Example activities at the Remembering level: memorise a poem, recall state capitals, remember math formulas

Example activities at the Understanding level: organise the animal kingdom based on a given framework, illustrate the difference between a rectangle and a square, summarize the plot of a simple story

Example activities at the Application level: use a formula to solve a problem, select a design to meet a purpose, reconstruct the passage of a new law through a given government/system

Example activities at the Analysis level: identify the ‘parts of’ democracy, explain how the steps of the scientific process work together, identify why a machine isn’t working

Example activities at the Evaluation level: make a judgment regarding an ethical dilemma, interpret the significance of a given law of physics, illustrate the relative value of technological innovation in a specific setting—a tool that helps recover topsoil farming, for example.

Example activities at the Creation level: design a new solution to an ‘old’ problem that honours/acknowledge the previous failures, delete the least useful arguments in a persuasive essay, write a poem based on a given theme and tone

The key to this tangle is the ability to remember to turn your tile! Variants include all the options of shading and solid colors as well as filling various shapes and other tangles within it.

Bales offers an almost mind-boggling array of possible variations include adding different shapes between the “flowers” (dots, circles, diamonds, etc.), shading, and filling in shapes as the pattern takes form.
