The setting in the book Gorgeous, is an 18 year old girl who becomes famous. She travels to many places in the book. The key places that we revisit in the book are New York City, New York; East Trawley, Missouri; and London, England. For example, the book said “I have now been the Queen of England for almost 15 years…” Pg. 323 and “I lived with my mom in East Trawley. Missouri, until I was seventeen." Pg. 3 This shows that not only did the main character used to live in East Trawley, Missouri, and now lives in England, but the book goes through many years of her life and different ages. The time setting in the book is the 21st century. We know this because, in the book it read “I was distracted by the enormous crowd that was now pin-drop silent, overflowing Times Square and staring up at the same huge LED screen that I’d been watching a few months ago...” Pg. 301. LED screens were not around before the 21st century and Times Square was built in 1904 which is in the 21st century

The point of view in the book, Gorgeous, is first person. This is true, because in the book it uses “me” “my” and “I". Becky, the main character is the point from which the story is told from. The definition of first person narrative is, the narrator is in the story; the narrator, Becky, is in the story so, it is first person. Some examples are, “On the morning of my 18th birthday…” Pg. 3

“I lived with my mom in East Trawley. Missouri until I was seventeen” Pg. 3

“I have now been the Queen of England for almost 15 years…” Pg. 323 In all of these examples, Becky is in the story using "my" and "I".

The protagonist in the book, Gorgeous, is an 18 year old girl named Becky (Rebecca) Randle. She lived in East Trawley, Missouri for most of her life in a trailer park with her mother. Two quotes in the book support this are, “I lived with my mom in East Trawley. Missouri until I was seventeen” Pg. 3 and “I grew up in what some people might call a mobile home and what other, snobbier people might call a manufactured home, but I was always fine with calling it a trailer. That's right, I said I grew up in a trailer..." Pg.3
Her mother died on her 18th birthday so she was left parentless for most of the book. She is an only child and she has brown hair, almond-shaped emerald eyes, and an average body. Examples from the book that support this are “I raised my right hand which had once been square and stubby and scrubbed raw, and saw that it was now slim and graceful…” Pg.52
“I saw amused almond shaped, emerald green eyes..” Pg.52
“... Returning every bountiful strand of chestnut hair to it’s sublimely impossible perfection.” Pg. 116
These show the physical characteristics of Becky. She also has a best friend, Rocher Bargemueller. They worked at a convenience store called the Super Shop-A-Lot before Becky became famous. During her fame, Becky, now known as Rebecca, meets a prince known as, Prince Gregory. They instantly fall in love and by the end of the book, they become married and live in England together with their 2 kids, Roberta and Thomas.

The antagonist in the book, Gorgeous, Tom Kelly. A top designer in everything that you could think of (Like a Calvin Klein). Tom Kelly MAY have given Becky whatever she wanted, but he also introduced many conflicts into her life such as, losing her true identity, and trashing her life as Rebecca. A quote from the book helps show this "I tried to hate Tom Kelly, to curse him as he'd curse me, to invent a punishment as bizarre as the one I was experiencing. But I couldn't, because more than wanting to kill him as painfully and publicly as possible, I wanted to grill him, to finally get some answers." Pg. 230 and also "Why had he done it, all of it? Why had he made me so beautiful and encouraged my adventures and my marriage, only to trash everything? Did he hate me, did he hate beautiful women, or all women, or the possibility of love, or my mother? What had she done to him? Was I his revenge?" Pg. 230 Tom Kelly let Becky become Rebecca, a world renowned woman. In Tom Kelly's words, Rebecca was The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, and Becky hated him for it. She felt like her becoming Rebecca, or whatever she became, was all his fault. Examples from the text that help aid this are “Why? WHY? I’m supposed to ask WHY I should trust you, you pure evil... satanic... piss-headed… evil… gross… repulsive… evil… fart-faced… evil… nowhere-near-as-good-looking-as-you-think-you-are...why? WHY? WHY???”

“Tom Kelly was the most cruel and spiteful creature who’d ever lived” Pg. 265

“First and foremost I blamed myself, because I’d said yes to Tom Kelly’s proposal and I’d worn the dresses, and even if I’d never trusted him, I’d done everything Tom had commanded” Pg.230
These quotes from the book show the feeling towards Tom Kelly from Becky.

Conflict

In the book, Gorgeous, there are many conflicts. The two main conflicts are, person vs. self and person vs. society. The conflict that involves person vs. self is Becky becoming Rebecca. Once Becky becomes Rebecca, she became famous and finds herself totally different than who she used to be. No one knew the real her because they were all infatuated with Rebecca instead. Becky tried to discover herself and find who she really was. She wanted people to know her as Becky, and not as Rebecca. Examples from the text include,

"...and to live out my expected life, my real life, my pre-Tom Kelly life, as Becky, and no one else" Pg. 58

"If I loved Prince Gregory then I'd have to ask myself: Who did he love? And who was he marrying? Me, or Rebecca?" Pg.216

"But I wasn't Rebecca. I was Becky and I'd made a terrible mistake. And there was nothing I could do except own up to it and muddle through." Pg. 217
"Here was the harshest truth: If being beautiful meant being loved, then I wasn't beautiful, not anymore. I was Becky, and I never felt so ugly." Pg. 224
These examples explain the struggle it was for Becky to find her true identity and to fight for it. As you can see, she's not very proud with who she became and that's why her becoming Rebecca was such a conflict in this book.

The second conflict which involves person vs. society relates, again, to Becky. Once Becky becomes, and then leaves Rebecca, she has to remember herself as Becky. People talk bad about Rebecca. They say that she was heartless, but Becky has to believe that she is not. She has to believe that she is different. Rumors start and conflicts arose because of her, but she tries to and pushes to get through it. Some examples that prove this are, "...everyone in the audience asks, "Who is that?"" Pg. 57

"I'm just sayin' that Rebecca Randle, wherever she is, she is gonna die alone and nobody's gonna care. And I bet she knows it." Pg. 241

"Find out. Don't be like Rebecca Randle. Don't run away. Give the world a chance. I mean, what's your choice?..." Pg. 260 These examples show how people/society feel about Rebecca, all this negativity is what Rebecca had to go through and that is why this was one of the main conflicts.

Theme

The theme in the book, Gorgeous, is; Beauty is being the best version of yourself, inside and out. This is true because,
everyone knew of Rebecca for her looks and her attention, they did not actually KNOW her for being herself, which was Becky. Becky always thought that she was beautiful when she was Rebecca, but she loved her inner beauty even more. And so did the people she was close to. If you have noticed, Becky was most happy around the people who KNEW who she was; the people she was most connected, or close to. The people wo knew her true identity and who she really was, knew her far more than anyone who knew just Rebecca. Those people cared about her more and were more interested in her actual self more than anything else. These people include her mother, Tom Kelly, Prince Gregory, and Rocher. Some examples that show are,
"I'm not complaining, I'm just- trying to cope with it. Every time we meet, I want to close my eyes so we can simply talk to each other and laugh and carry on. So I can just enjoy being with you." Pg. 201
"Because now that the prince is in love with you, I mean, with normal, regular Becky you, with the you I grew up with, it's just better. Because now I sort of feel like maybe, someone could fall in love with me." Pg. 312

"Inner beauty wants out." Front page
Most of these examples are things that Becky's most closest companions have told her. This helps support that my theme is;

Beauty is being the best version of yourself, inside and out.

Characterization

Characterization in the book, Gorgeous, includes Becky's speech, actions, looks, thoughts, and effects on others. Becky's speech help say things about her character like, her and her mom don't have a lot of money so they have to live in a trailer. She is embarrassed about it and insecure about the thought of living in one and gets irritated when people talk about it. An important quote that shows this is, ''I grew up in what some people might call a mobile home and what other, snobbier people might call a manufactured home, but I was always fine with calling it a trailer. That's right, I said I grew up in a trailer. F*** you." Pg. 3
Becky's thoughts help learn things about her character by showing us that she can be very insecure and gets down on herself. When she thinks of herself being beautiful, she thinks she is crazy because she has always pictured herself as an ordinary person. She thinks a lot if she really is something and if some things that happen to her are really true. She uses a lot of what-if statements. Examples from the text are, "Which was when I knew for pretty much 100 percent certain that no matter what my mom had promised me, I was never going to believe in magic" Pg. 6
"Because what if, and I was just throwing it out there, just for sh***s and giggles, and because I couldn't not think about it, what if I called Tom Kelly and said yes, and what if I could become the most beautiful woman in the whole goddamned world. Beautiful. The most beautiful. Me." Pg. 29
Becky's effect on others are mostly positive. People around Becky feel good and comfortable. Her best friend Rocher, loves her. Her mom thinks she is amazing, and prince Gregory is in love with her. Other ordinary people are mostly jealous of her because of her status, looks, and attention. Here are some examples to prove it...
"But it's going to change your life, forever. And Becky, I want you to swear to me, because I love you so much, and because you deserve everything, you deserve the whole world, so Becky, when the magic shows up- I want you to say yes" Pg. 4

"That was when Aimee and Suzanne returned from their latest class. They took one look at me and howled "WE HATE YOU!!!"... I can't believe that Prince Gregory is marrying you," Pg. 312

Becky's actions tell us more about her by letting us know that she sticks up for those she cares about; she will not let others hurt the people she cares about or bring them down... without getting away with it. She can take care of others and take care of herself with no problem. Quotes that support this statement are,
"My fingers closed around the handle, the jumpsuit raised my arm and the bayonet flew into the terrorists palm and he dropped the grenade, with the pin remaining in place. Then the terrorist gave up and as he was dragged away, all I could think was, I guess I'm not in Missouri anymore. And I can take care of myself. And I can take care of Prince Gregory" Pg. 180

"I looked at her. I looked at all of them. "Excuse me," I said. "on her worst day, my mom was still a million times nicer than all of you put together. And if you want to stand here and talk about her body, why don't you take a look at your own." Pg. 5
Becky's looks are displayed as a young, beautiful yet ordinary girl. She looks very mature and perfected. Quotes from the text that support this are,
"I raised my right hand which had once been square and stubby and scrubbed raw, and saw that it was now slim and graceful..." Pg. 52
"I saw amused almond shaped, emerald green eyes.." Pg.52

"It was a nose, perfected" Pg.52

"... Returning every bountiful strand of chestnut hair to it's sublimely impossible perfection." Pg. 116
These examples show her looks in more depth, and can give you visual of what she looks like.
