I had the chance to introduce myself and meet the other participants. It felt good to connect with people who are also on their own spiritual journeys. This week made me reflect on the importance of relationships in Islam—how building trust, showing kindness, and being open with others helps create a strong sense of ukhuwah.

I also took some time to think about my niyyah for joining this program. I reminded myself that everything I do should be for the sake of Allah, including my effort to learn and grow here. It made me realize how valuable it is to have companions who encourage you to become better. Even small conversations and shared experiences can be sources of personal growth.

Week 2: Rukun Islam (The Five Pillars of Islam)

This week was a heartfelt reminder of the foundations that hold our faith together. The five pillars—Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj—are more than just rituals; they are a way of life that keeps us spiritually grounded. Reflecting on these practices made me realize that they aren’t just obligations but opportunities to reconnect with Allah in meaningful ways.

Shahada (Declaration of Faith): This pillar reaffirmed the importance of consciously renewing my belief in Allah and the Prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH). It’s not just words; it’s a commitment to live by those words every day.

Salah (Prayer): Salah felt like a sanctuary—a reminder that five times a day, I can pause and reset my mind, heart, and intentions. It’s not just an obligation but an opportunity to step away from the chaos and stand in the presence of my Creator.

Zakat (Charity): I reflected on the fact that wealth is a trust from Allah. Giving a portion of it through Zakat purifies both my soul and my earnings, helping me detach from materialism and care for others.

Sawm (Fasting): Fasting goes beyond abstaining from food—it’s about disciplining the soul, building empathy for the less fortunate, and strengthening self-control.

Hajj (Pilgrimage): Even though I haven’t performed Hajj yet, learning about it reminded me of the unity of the ummah and the importance of humility before Allah. It’s a reminder that, ultimately, we are all travelers in this world.

The focus on the first three articles of Rukun Iman this week helped me reflect on the essence of belief—what it means to trust in Allah, have faith in the unseen, and stay guided by divine revelation.

Belief in Allah: Understanding Allah’s attributes made me more mindful of His mercy and wisdom. It reminded me that trusting His plan—especially in difficult moments—requires not only patience but also love and hope.

Belief in Angels: I found it humbling to reflect on the role of angels who record our deeds and fulfill Allah’s commands. Knowing this made me more aware of my actions, even when no one is watching.

Belief in Scriptures: I realized that the Quran is not just a book to be read but a guide to be lived. It reminded me of the importance of engaging with it meaningfully—through reflection, practice, and prayer.

These beliefs are essential in keeping me grounded and hopeful in both trials and ease.

Belief in Prophets: Learning about the lives of the prophets (peace be upon them) inspired me to remain patient and steadfast. Their stories showed me that every challenge is a chance to grow spiritually.

Belief in the Day of Judgment: This belief heightened my sense of responsibility, reminding me that every action—no matter how small—has weight.

This week’s focus on ihsan (excellence) reminded me of the importance of doing good, not for recognition, but purely for the sake of Allah. It made me reflect on how ihsan isn’t limited to major acts of worship—it’s about striving for excellence in every action, no matter how small.

Being a muhsin means:

Worshipping Allah as though I see Him—praying and performing acts of worship with sincerity, knowing that even if I don’t see Him, He sees me.

Doing good in private and public, without seeking praise or reward from others.

Forgiving and being just, even when it’s difficult, because that is what pleases Allah the most.

This week challenged me to adopt a mindset of intentional goodness, where every interaction becomes an opportunity to reflect the beauty of Islam.

The final week centered around adab—good manners and conduct—which lies at the heart of our faith. I was reminded that adab reflects our relationship with Allah and affects how we interact with people. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent as a model of perfect character, and following his example means embodying kindness, humility, and respect in every interaction.

Kindness and Patience: This week reminded me to be gentle and patient with others, even when I feel wronged or misunderstood.

Honesty and Humility: I reflected on the importance of speaking the truth while maintaining humility, knowing that arrogance only distances us from Allah.

Respect for Differences: Treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their background or beliefs, is not just a courtesy but an essential part of Islam.

This week made me realize that even small gestures—like smiling, listening attentively, or offering a kind word—can have a big impact. Practicing good adab is a way to embody the teachings of Islam and leave a positive mark on those I encounter.

Reflection on Usrah 2

Joining Usrah for the second time has deepened my understanding of Ibadah (worship) beyond obligation. I learned that sincerity (Niyyah) is essential, as the Qur’an states, “They were only commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.” (Surah Al-Bayyinah 98:5). The concept of Ihsan taught me to worship with mindfulness, as the Prophet ﷺ said, “Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him.” (Bukhari & Muslim). Understanding Khusyu’ in Salah made me realize the need for focus in prayer. Learning about Sawm (fasting) reinforced its role in self-discipline, as stated in the Qur’an, “Fasting has been prescribed upon you… that you may attain Taqwa.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183). Lastly, Zakah helped me see charity as a way to purify wealth and support others. This Usrah has motivated me to improve my sincerity, focus, and consistency in worship.
