In the beginning of the play, a Capulet party was held to introduce Juliet to Paris. Lord and Lady Capulet believed Juliet was of age to be married, and Paris was the man who met their high standards. This shows the readers how controlling the Capulet's were of Juliet's life, and how obedient her character was. Instead of talking to Paris however, Juliet became increasingly curious about the stranger she met named Romeo. The pair eagerly danced together, causing Juliet to forget about her meeting Paris. At the end of the night, Romeo kissed Juliet and they simultaneously fell in love . Juliet was blinded by her love for Romeo to the point where she did not ask if Romeo was a Capulet.

After asking the nurse " what is yond gentlemen?"( act 1 scene 5), Juliet discovered that Romeo was from the feuding Montague family. Juliet's trait of obedience urged her to stay loyal to her Capulet family and to marry Paris. However, she had a growing love for Romeo that she could not ignore. While Juliet was on her balcony, she said to the empty night "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. And I'll no longer be a Capulet." ( Act 2 scene 2)The girl was unaware that Romeo was hiding in her garden while listening to everything she said. As Romeo jumped out of the garden and proclaimed his love for her, Juliet plummeted into a deep feeling of devastation. Juliet was torn between being loyal to her family, and being loyal to Romeo. Young Juliet wanted nothing more than to be with her love, but they couldn't be seen together unless they were on opposite sides of the feud.

In Act 2 of the play "Romeo and Juliet", Juliet contemplates if she should choose her family or Romeo. As much as Juliet wishes she could marry Romeo while also staying obedient to her family, she knows that her family would not accept Romeo due to him being a Montague. After meeting with Romeo, Juliet decides that he will be her husband no matter what others think. This feeling of rebellion is a dramatic change to her obedient character. Although she knows it is wrong, Juliet can not help but tell anyone who will listen about her love for Romeo.

In act 2 scene 4-5, Juliet eagerly tells the Nurse about her and Romeo. The Nurse is a witty character that is very close to Juliet since she raised her when she was an infant. Although the Nurse is upset, Juliet makes her travel to meet Romeo. As Juliet waits for her return, she is hopeful that the Nurse will return with knowledge of their marriage. When the Nurse finally returns, she says to Juliet, "you know not how to choose a man. Romeo!" This quote shows that the Nurse does not approve of Romeo. However, the Nurse also says to "hie you hence to Friar Lawrence' cell", which means that Romeo will be waiting to marry Juliet there. Juliet's character trait of hopeless romantic causes her to become overwhelmed with joy and hope that she will be able to marry her love.

In the song "Helpless" by the American Musical Hamilton, the singer obsesses over her lover she met at a party. Similar to the play "Romeo and Juliet", the couple in the song become increasingly fond of each other, and are quick to plan a wedding. Juliet relates to the raw feeling of being "helpless" when referring to her love for Romeo. The lyrics "look into your eyes and the sky's the limit" accurately represents how Juliet feels towards Romeo. Similar to the song, Juliet worries over how her Father will react when she tells him about her lover.

In Act 3 of the play "Romeo and Juliet", Tybalt is murdered by Romeo. Instead of executing Romeo, the Prince banished him for killing Tybalt, who killed his kingsmen, Mercutio. While some may believe that banishment is better than death, Romeo would rather die than be away from his love, Juliet. with her cousin dead and her husband banished to Verona, Juliet spirals into deep sadness. This demonstrates to the audience the desperation for love that Juliet's character portrays.

With Romeo banished to Verona, Juliet is expected to marry Paris. Lord Capulet, Juliet's father, thought that arranging their wedding would be a way of cheering up Juliet from her state of grief. Juliet proceeds to tell her father "not proud you have, but thankful that you have. Proud can I never be of what I hate, but thankful even for hate that is meant love." ( Act 3 scene 5 ) This means that she does not want to marry Paris, but she is thankful for her father's attempt at cheering her up. After Capulet storms out due to frustration, Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence. Juliet's depression over Romeo causes her to accept the plan of taking a potion to fake death. The audience can see how desperate Juliet is when she would face her fear of being buried alive so that she could be with Romeo.
