The daughter and the niece of the Reverend in town fell ill. The doctor diagnosed their condition as bewitchment. Soon after, young girls started claiming to be possessed by the devil, accusing local women in their village to be doing the witchcraft. The people in the village were terrified and decided to believe the girls. There were 19 accused persons that were put on trial and hanged at Salem’s Gallows Hill. There was one man who was crushed to death. Over 200 more people were accused of witchcraft as well. Finally, the colony admitted that the trials had been a mistake and the public opinion turned against the trials. People that had been tried as guilty were annulled and families were compensated for.
