In a spiritual way, the Bees link to Lily’s adventure throughout the book. Also, Bees live and function under a queen bee. Without one around or present, then the insects have no real purpose or direction. In this case, the queen bee would be Lily’s mom, since Lily feels as though she has no reason to live her life, and goes searching for a motherly figure, or “queen bee”. For example, in Chapter one the bees that fly around Lily’s bedroom show that she needs to find a new home, as the bees that have been in the jar were captured and forced to be in the container and are unhappy inside of it, which is why they escaped the jar. This is like how Lily is also unhappy with being forced to live with T-Ray. Coincidentally, bees who are alone and trapped will eventually die, which Lily who is also isolated suffers emotional pain from this. Also, in Chapter fourteen, a bee colony without a queen bee, “will soon die off”, which also shows that Lily needs a mother or a figure like it to live happily. Eventually, she gets to the Boatwright household, and feels like a bee that has found her hive, her community to live in, and that August is also like a mother figure that can be her symbolic, “queen bee”, after she teaches her how to bee keep. Finally when May commits suicide, it shows that bees have another symbolic purpose in the book, which is bees are a symbol of, “rebirth after death”, meaning that May’s spirit with Lily and the sisters will live on. This is supported by the fact that Greek kings made their tombs in shapes of beehives to show power after death, explained by August.
