Abrasion

Definition: The scraping of skin against a rough surface. This type of wound wears away the top layer of skin and increases chances of infection if not treated properly.

Initial Care: Apply any treatment cream or petroleum jelly to keep the wound moisturized, then cover the injured area with a bandage.

Post Care: Check the wound everyday to make sure there is no infection, keep the wound clean and change out bandages regularly.

Lacerations

Definition: Occur when a blunt force is delivered over a sharp bone or a bone that is poorly padded, giving a wound the appearance of a jagged-edge cavity.

Initial Care: Apply pressure to the wounded area using gauze or any clean cloth, if the wound bleeds through the gauze pack more on top, do not take that initial gauze off. Seek medical help.

Post Care: Once going to a doctor a laceration will most likely be fixed with stitches, clean around the stitched area around 24 hours after or as the doctor advises.

Incisions

Definition: A wound that is most likely used during a surgical procedure, has clean edges and is a clean cut.

Initial Care: Incisions are usually made during a surgical procedure so there are really no initial care steps made. However applying pressure if an accidental incision is made would help.

Post Care: If an incision is made it will likely be stitched up, when the stitches are healing applying salt water and ensuring no dried blood is present on the stitches would help.

Puncture

Definition: A puncture wound is the direct stabbing of tissue by a sharp object that can be fatal.

Initial Care: Apply pressure with a clean cloth, and once the bleeding has slowed down or came to a stop apply a bandage to cover the wound and help prevent infection. Refer to a physician immediately if a puncture wound is present.

Post Care: After referring to a physician, you would want to make sure you keep the wound covered and clean. If any antibiotics are referred make sure you use it as directed, and make sure any signs of infection are not present.

Avulsion

Definition: When the skin is torn away from the body and the body undergoes severe bleeding.

Initial Care: When the skin is detached apply the tissue to a moist gauze preferably with saline solution. Take the athlete to the hospital to see further medical health.

Post Care: Make sure the wound is covered with a bandage and kept clean while also making sure the wound is kept moist so it doesn't stick to the bandage.

Universal Precautions

When caring for an open wound there are many different precautions that should be taken to ensure that the help giver stays safe as well as the injured person so they don't get infected. If available make sure you wash your hands before and after taking care of the injured person. Next if there are any clean gloves around it would help to use those to reduce pathogen transfer and definitely don't touch the wound directly. After caring for the wound make sure all waste is properly disposed and any surfaces are cleaned. Finally when accessing the wound make sure after bleeding is stopped that a bandage is applied to make sure the wound isn't exposed to pathogens that may enter the skin and infect the wound.

Signs Of An Infected Wound

There are many different signs to recognize that a wound is infected, if you experience:

Redness or inflammation of the wound
Sensitivity or Pain of the wound
Any Pus located in the wound
Swelling of the lymph nodes
Fever
Then you most likely have an infected wound.
