After reading Ben Ratliff's, Every Song Ever's chapter 18, On The Waves Linking, I gathered a clear understanding of his interpretation. In the book, Ratliff explains Linking as a music element that gives songs or arrangements its uniqueness when it comes to organization. As it is well known, music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time. The common elements of music aside from the ones listed in Every Song Ever are, pitch rhythm dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. Even though every song in the world persist to embody all of these elements, none of them sound the same (unless intended to). Ratliff goes on to say, "“Rather than settling within its prescribed parameters, it seems to move inexorably forward and outward, unfolding and enfolding, according to the logic that suits it best.”

Do I agree?

I strongly agree with Ratliff's point about the concept of linking. I never took the time to realize how although every song embodies the same elements, none of them sound the same. I find it quite intriguing how there are infinite amounts of stories that have been told through the same organization of a song but with different sounds. I agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element because in its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form or cultural activity include the creation of works of music. "“we recognize implicitly the ways in which certain pieces of music show supreme organization, but seem a result of form cumulatively developed outward from the center, or from the beginning of a piece, since music moves linearly through time.”

In chapter 18, Ratliff included multiple song selections that exemplified the element of Linking. One song that stuck out to me the most as far us understanding the element would be, Gabriel Fauré’s piano quintets, Quintets no. 2. Ratliff continuously explains how the variations on three melodic motifs initiate movement without constructed pattern. Ratliff explains how the linking of melodic encounters, emotions, and tonalities assist in the build." “In the end, the piece achieves sublime craftsmanship. But it also promises a deep and complex sense of logic for the listener. Through its echoes, its climbs and descents, its circular patterns, it seems to be saying: nobody travels alone. Nothing is unconnected from anything else.”

After careful examination of my personal playlist, I decided to selected Sea, by Julie Title as my musical example. In this piece, Julie Titles song is very organized by a simple piano, acoustic guitar, and electric -- nothing more or less. What carries the song in uniqueness and allows the song to travel forward is the mystical harmonies, echoiness of the track, and her gradually intensifying vocals. The song is very well constructed but the unique qualities help implify the true character and linking.q
