Auschwitz-Birkenau (Poland): This camp was the largest and most notorious; over 1.1 million humans were killed, mostly Jews which were disposed of when they couldn't perform labor.

Treblinka (Poland): This camp was only meant for extermination. about 870,000 Jews were killed in gas chambers but only a few survived.

Sobibor (Poland): Extermination camp which killed 250,000 Jews as well as Belzec which killed 434,000 Jews.

Majdanek (Poland): This camp was both a labor and extermination camp which killed over 78,000 people.

Chelmno (Poland): This camp used mobile gas vans which killed about 150,000 Jews from the Lodz Ghetto.

Buchenwald (Germany): This camp was mainly a labor camp in which thousands died from starvation, disease, or execution.

Dachau (Germany): This was the first concentration camp which used as a model for other. This camp held Jews, Political prisoners and clergy.

Bergen-Belsen (Germany): This wasn't a concentration camp but thousands died from disease and starvation.

Elie Wiesel was a survivor of the holocaust who shared his story by writing a book by the name of "Night". In the book he talks about how his family was forcefully put into the ghettos and then transported to concentration camps. In the end he was the only person to survive from his family. After he published "Night" he sold out 10 million copies and he was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

Some other well known people that survived the Holocaust are Fanny Aizenberg, Katie Altenberg, and Ania Drimer.

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943):

This was the most famous act of the Jewish resistance that was an effort to oppose Nazi Germany final effort to transport the remaining ghetto population to the gas chambers of the Majdanek and Treblinka camps.

Partisan Fighters were Jews that escaped to the forests and joined resistance groups. They sabotaged Nazi supply lines and attacked German soldiers.

Jews that were put into the concentration camps resisted by maintaining their Jewish identities which was seen as a form of defiance against Nazi's.

Jewish Rescue Efforts

Underground networks forged false papers and helped smuggle children to safety. Jews helped others escape the ghettos or hide somewhere safe.

some non Jewish rescuers that save the people in the camps were Oskar Schindler that Saved over 1,000 Jews by employing them in his factory. Irena Sendler which helped smuggle 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto.

People have speculated that he fled to South America, Argentina but the theory has been debunked as his dental records matched the bodies teeth in the bunker in berlin.

Once the people were treated, some returned to their former home and others emigrated to other countries. Regardless of where their journey took them, it was clear that they would be faced with antisemitism and hostility.

Citizens of Germany had major rebuilding to do when it came to physical landscape and mental well-being. Survivors of the camps faced major trauma and survivors syndrome which meant that they faced long-term physical and mental scars from their experiences in the death camps.

Immigrants were welcomed in some countries but denied in other. The United States of America, Canada, Australia welcomed immigrants while Great Britain rejected Jewish immigrants.

Almost all of the schools in the world have incorporated WWII and the Holocaust in their history curriculum to learn lessons on the dangers of authoritarianism, silence and hate. There are also exhibits of the Holocaust and WWII around the world and many universities have made their very own exhibits in their libraries.

He also believed in racial superiority by creating an "Aryan" race which is defined as a white person with German descendants. He blamed the Jewish community and his goal was to "cleanse" the society.

Hitler also wanted to expand the German territory on the Eastern side of Europe. He wanted to claim Poland, and the Soviet union so that Germans could have more space to live.

He wanted to establish a Totalitarian Dictatorship which meant that he wanted to have all the power to himself only. When he became the Chancellor of Germany, he got rid of all the democratic institutions and banned other parties.

Another parallel that can be made is using fear to control others. In Nazism the fear of being arrested or death had kept many people silent and they were forced to be obedient to Hitler and his regime. In the Crucible, the fear of being accused of being a witch or worshiping the devil led to mass hysteria and obedience to the court/the ministers.

The third parallel that can be seen in both Nazism and The Scarlet Letter is public shaming. In Nazism, the Jews were forced to were a yellow star around their arm which would publicly humiliate them in from of the Nazi German citizens. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is forced to wear the red "A" and stand of a scaffold as punishment.

The fourth parallel seen between all 3 of the topics is losing human rights. In Nazism, the Jews had no rights under the Nuremberg Laws and if they ever tried to retaliate, they would be shot on the spot by the SS officers. In The Crucible, people of the town could not speak freely and there were no fair trials being held. If the head minister says that the person was guilty then others would all agree. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester was denied the rights to privacy and autonomy.
