On January 17th, 1920, all forms of liquor were fully outlawed in the United States. The goal was complete abstinence and a less violent population. Some crime went down, but the mob business thrived with full control of the illegal liquor market. They jacked prices up so high that it was near impossible for the average man to get a drink. Al capone was at the head of this crime web, and is still famous today as a notorious crime boss. On December 5th, 1933, prohibition finally came to an end at the hands of Franklin D. Rosevelt. The United States realized that they could not ban liquor, they could only ban safe and legal liquor.

Over the course of a decade starting in the 1920s, African American creativity thrived in an open market of music, art, dance, and poetry that forever changed our narrow-minded America. The Harlem Renaissance mothered important art icons like Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holliday. Jazz became popularized, and new establishments that specifically house African American self-expression opened.

Much like many other social justice movements, the fight for women's rights is still going on. However, the women who led the beginning of our revolution and their accomplishments should be remembered. Before, it was customary for women to stay quiet when important things were being discussed. The strong leaders of the womens rights revolution changed that, and women in America gained the right to vote.

Lynching, Racism and the KKK

The 'patriotism' that American officials were trying to protect during the Palmer Raids was apparently the brotherhood of the KKK. Even after slavery had been outlawed for a while, many people and even entire communities were still acting under the Klan. Members described it as a community of brothers, something much like boy scouts without any useful skills learned. The law stated this was illegal, but nobody was directly going after the KKK because they were either on their side or could not find the evidence. KKK communities were seen decorating local businesses and self-advertising through the local churches. While all of this team building and brotherhood was going on, lynching of African Americans was still being conducted.

The 1st Red Scare was a period of the 1920's when American government officials made tyrannical orders and arrested thousands of people based on the suspicion that they were terrorists. The reasoning behind all of this mobilized fear was the new popularity of far-left movements, such as communism. Entire buildings of people were arrested for the crime of having a foreign accent. Americans were paranoid that outside parties were trying to destroy their patriotism.

What is Tradition?

Tradition is a transition of customs and practices that are passed from generation to generation, typically a religious or homestead theme.
Negative traditions include the patronizing of women, simply because 'that is the way it has always been', Pushback on the Harlem Renaissance because African Americans had never had a place to express themselves before, the continuation of the KKK simply because it is a 'historical' organization and the Palmer Raids that were executed on suspicion without evidence which mirrors the 'do whatever we want we are in power' tyrants of the middle ages.
An example of a progressive break from tradition includes the prohibition of alcohol when our country was typically a free country.

What Did Breaking Tradition Change?

We can thank domestic terrorists for most of the anti-tyrant laws in our legislation today. The 1st Red Scare was a great example of abuse of power, and so it is referenced today as why laws and acts have to pass through multiple people before being approved. Breaking tradition also gave women a chance to be heard. After fighting for so long to be seen as people, congress finally decided to break the tradition of oppression. Prohibition changed the way our government handles regulating a substance, which taught them how to better manipulate the medical marijuana industry for profit.

In our society today we are experiencing a break of tradition. Queer culture popularity has skyrocketed in the past few years as most of the world is accepting this idea of sexuality on a spectrum. I believe that this is an extremely positive social change that will open up our minds to abstract thought, which will help our species progress.
