A population policy is a series of policies implemented by a government to alter the way its population changes. This is done by supporting large families or immigration to increase population growth, or by advocating birth control to lower population size. Guyana has received help and developed different methods of managing over and under population when surrounding birth control, food security and housing.

Guyana’s Ministry of Agriculture has taken a number of steps to guarantee that Guyana is on a long-term path to food security. The Grown More Food Campaign, the Agriculture Export Diversification Program, and the Rural Enterprise Agricultural Development are examples of these initiatives. The Grow More Campaign was launched to ensure that Guyanese have enough food for themselves as well as surplus to export to Caribbean countries and other foreign territories. Another important policy which was implemented is the READ which primary purpose was to develop poor rural households' human, social, and financial assets in order to improve their living conditions, particularly for small-scale producers and vulnerable populations and would also improve food security. The READ offered support and assistance to resource poor producers and rural households. It also improved technology were also integrated into the production and marketing supply chains for agricultural and non-agricultural industries.

As Guyana’s population grew, they needed more and better infrastructure so they brought in policies such as: the town and country planning act, which was made to have orderly and progressive development of rural areas, cities, towns and to improve their amenities. The plan also focuses on agricultural and productivity growth in order to boost food availability while simultaneously creating jobs and income in rural areas where poverty and food insecurity are the most severe. And the housing act which is an act to make provision with respect to housing of people of the working class and for purposes connected.

There are numerous approaches and solutions that are effective and are simple to implement. As is the natural course of most countries when its population grows, Guyana started offering proper family planning and allowed nongovernmental organizations such as the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) which helped to put forward contraceptive methods which includes the use of condom, IUD and oral pills through the ministry of health.

Guyana’s population policies as it relates to the above mentioned categories have improved over recent years. The average number of children per woman is now 2.4, which means the country has made progress in its endeavours and is now setting higher goals to be accomplished.
