Some essential components of a bilingual evaluation include gathering a detailed case history about the child’s language exposure and use, conducting interviews with parents, caregivers, and teachers, and assessing both languages using a combination of formal and informal tools. It is also important to use dynamic assessment to understand the child’s learning potential and observe their communication in natural settings such as home or school. Special considerations include being mindful of cultural and linguistic biases in standardized assessments.

Two essential components include a language sample in a comfortable/naturalistic setting and dynamic assessment. It is important to keep the client's second (or first) language in mind, specifically in regards to pragmatic skills, grammar differences, and vocabulary knowledge. The way bilingual clients learn language may vary, so comparison between clients must be done with caution. Support of language learning in the home is also imperative to keep in mind.

Some essential components of a bilingual evaluation are utilizing dynamic assessment, understanding the child's language use and proficiency through caregiver reports, and carefully considering cultural and linguistic factors when planning a standardized assessment. We would also want to collect a language sample in both the child's L1 and L2.

Special considerations that we must keep in mind when conducting bilingual evaluation, is to ensure that any standardize assessments used are appropriate for our client, based of their norm population. We must also ensure that we assess both language, learn about their language history and how they acquired them. It is important that parents take part of the evaluation as a reliable informant to appropriately assess their home language is the SLP is not proficient.

We have to be aware that many of the standardized assessments are not always "standardized" for bilingual individuals. This is an important consideration, since the scores may not reflect the client's abilities appropriately. Additionally, the evaluation needs to be in both languages that the client speaks to fully see any deficit.

First we should take a look at the case history to get an idea of the languages spoken and evaluate L1 and L2. Identify which is spoken more at home, what type of setting determines language dominance etc.. We always want to respect individuals culture and try to involve family/caregivers as much as possible throughout the process because family spends the most time with the individual and can have a great positive affect throughout the tx process.

Essential components: Case history is the #1 most essential component, as no two bilingual speakers are alike. The SLP must get a thorough profile of the client's language use as well as cultural experiences and things in their life that have an impact on how and when they use language. Dynamic assessment should also be incorporated because its "test-teach-test" format accounts for culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds without being "standardized" on a norm that the client might not fit into. The setting should also be naturalistic and the SLP should take care to not alienate their client. Even if the SLP doesn't speak both languages that the client does they should at least try to assess in both languages, even with an interpreter, to ensure that what is truly a deficit IS a deficit, e.g. consistent across both languages, and not a "difference" caused by a language barrier.

Special considerations: what language pair the client speaks, which language is dominant and which is non-dominant, different cultural or religious beliefs, needs of not just the child but also their caregiver(s)
