In this photo there is a split between a young boy waiting in line to go on the school bus and a another young boy waiting in line to go to the army it looks like. It shows the contrast between how one boy has the privilege for education which give him opportunities. Whereas the other boy who lives in what looks like a war stricken country has probably been forced to work because he has no money or the government has made him go. You can clearly see that the little boy does not want to be there because of the sad look on his face he looks like he can't be any older that 11 because of how small he is. This could be politics power and justice. Because it shows how that if the country is ran the right way it can be peaceful and the country and the children in it can develop. whereas if the country is run wrong then it can become a horrible place for young children to live because of war and they get no opportunities.

In this peice of art created by Uğur Gallenkuş. On the right you can see a painting of what looks to be a upper class young girl, most likely a royal due to her earings and attire. She has on a robe and a turban like headwear. On the other hand you can see a young boy or girl with a bandaged wrapped head in a treatment room. I would guess this is due to either abuse or war related. The contrasting sides within these two images are the privliged and the unprivileged. I would say the the glabal context would be politcs power and justice. Clearly the heirachy in the left image are not doing the ethically right thing due to a young child being in danger and being harmed. However the one on the right seems to be fine and living comfortably due to their wealth and class. This a major problem in society due to the fact that those who are less fortunate financially are more likley to be in danger and has to resort to stealing, drugs and crime. In relation to the photo it is clear that the child on the left has had a wrong doing to them and it is not a fault of their own due to their age and that there should be a guardian to prevent this from happening.

The photo is split between war and peace. On the left side there is war with four men waving their hands in the air with guns and on the right side there is peace with two women waving their hands in the air without guns.

Both sides have colour but nothing that stands out in contrast with the background. The thing that stands out the most is that on the right side the colours stand out more with brighter colours then on the left side.

The weapons represent war, death and misery. Having your hands in the air might represent freedom because you aren't worrying about things like war and your mind is clear.

The "story" of the image is the Syrian war going on and the high death toll going on. The image teaches us that war is a serious matter even if it doesn't affect us directly. The image also tells us that just because nothing bad is happening to us now doesn't mean things can't change from good to worse. Just because you cannot see evil with you own eyes doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

In this image, Uber Gallenkus split two photos and put them together. The image shows 2 younger boys, one playing with lego and one doing hard labour. By looking at the backgrounds of these images, you can tell that the boy on the right is at school while the boy on the left is outside in a broken down area. The boy working has dirt all over his face and hands, this can signify how hard he works and that he works for a long time. The boy playing with lego is more fortunate than the other, you can tell this by looking at his clothes. His clothes are very clean, while the other boys aren't. I think that this image represents the global issue of Politics, power and justice, this is because the boy on the left should have the rights to go to school and get a good education but he is unable to do this and is forced to work. While the boy on the right is able to get the education that he needs and does not have to work to help his family like the other boy does. This image really contrast the different ways that people live and grow up, when looking at the images you can clearly identify who has the easier life and who has more rights. The boy on the left lives a more dangerous life because of the work he is doing while the other boy gets to live with his parents in a nice house, nice clothes and gets to go to school. We can tell who is more fortunate than others and by looking at this image you can really appreciate the life that we live because we got to grow up with school and everything we need to survive.

Deer in instagram post vs in wildfire

This collage depicts an Instagram post which shows two deer in a luscious green environment. The deer to the right is cut off by the screen and the rest of the deer continues into the background of the image which shows the California wildfires. The Instagram post appears to be a screenshot displaying someone's post in which the greenery is very vibrant. In contrast, the orange hue of the background is very prominent and blazing with yellow streaks. These are contrasting colours which could be used to demonstrate the contrasting situations and the severity of the case.

This collage is not split evenly as the Instagram post is a lot smaller and rectangularly placed on top of the wildfire image. This could have been done to show that people appear to care for nature by taking pictures of it while not caring about the actual bigger issue of the wildfires which are affecting these animals. Ugur describes this image as 'A deer flees flames as the Quail Fire burns near Winters California, USA.' Ugur clearly shows the Instagram logo with the picture to comment on how society may only care for nature because of the attention it gets.

In the same manner, the Instagram post shows multiple deer (although only one in full) whereas there is only one deer in the wildfire which may be because they have all died in the fire.

The story which is being told in this collage is of the California wildfire which occurred in the US in 2020. Gallenkus is trying to make a comment on how the environment has changed and how the habitats of these animals have changed. Whereas on one hand, they were free in the wild now they are struggling for their lives and trying to escape. It is also a comment on the way in which society only publishes the good side of nature and does not take time to consider the implications of such a disaster on the creatures which they once admired.

The global issue presented is environmental degradation.

The image above portrays a rocket ship collaged with a life raft. Those on the raft are refugees eating for rescue from the Spanish NGO after leaving Libya. This image is meant to illustrate the stark contrast between the priorities of different groups of people. While those of us in prosperous situations are exploring space, there are people right here on Earth who struggle to find a safe place to call home. The average crew size of a rocket is 8-10 people. These rockets do, however, have the capability to safely carry up to 20 people. This is contrasted with the image of the life raft, where it is obviously overcrowded and dangerously so. This shows that safety is a privilege exclusive to those not struggling to stay alive. Many refugee lifeboats are overcrowded to to the sheer number of people struggling to get out of whatever danger they are in. Astronauts don’t have that problem, as they have the luxury and priority of safety due to government support, something that refugees evidently lack.

In the collage, Ugur spliced together an image of a young boy skiing with another boy using crutches because one of his legs is amputated. The image on the right depicts a boy, around the age of 7 in the mountains skiing and holding ski poles. He has a big smile plastered across his face, the image is bright and he is wearing all blue. The image on the left is of a young boy, seemingly similarly aged, also wearing all blue. Their positions match, however, the ski pole is now replaced with a walking stick. The fact both the boys are holding poles highlights the difference between the two. The right image also includes the boy's sister. She also only has one leg and is aided with crutches. These similarities create a larger contrast for the viewer. The image is cut more towards the right, meaning there left image takes up a larger portion of the collage. This is in order to make room to include the girl in the image.

The image of the two was photographed by Noorullah Shirzada. The two kids are Afghan and the endless war between the US and the Taliban is shown through their tragic wounds. The kids were 2 of 10, all of whom were walking to school one day when they found a mysterious object. They showed it to their aunt and the object exploded. Three of the children died along with the aunt. They lost at least one limb each.

Ugur wished to communicate the tragedies of war through this collage. The unintended consequences of the war is all of the children and innocent people that are hurt. The Boy on the right may even be American, this would show the differences between the children of both sides of the war. Despite the US being heavily involved in the conflict he is still living a very privileged life. This is because the war isn't taking place in his home country so he isn't affected.

Both sets of children are innocent but they live out very different lives.

Ugur Gallen uses composition to showcase the setting of this image. In the foreground a white polar bear is seen sitting on a small patch of ice in the Arctic ocean. The background includes glaciers, mountains, clouds. From this description, the photo seems to allude to climate change through the small size of the glacier and the appearance of only one polar bear. The bears expression and body language suggests a solemn tone. As we look upward, the clouds appear to take an unusual shape. At a closer look, we can observe that the clouds are coming out of 3 identical factory chimneys. Gallen’s use of color is also significant. The first part of the collage, including the arctic landscape is primarily blue. Through this colour Gallen attempts to envoke somber, sad feelings as the impact of pollution on the arctic is devastating. The second aspect of the collage is mainly red. Red often connotes danger, thus we can assume Gallen is implying the danger and destruction factory emissions and its contribution to greenhouse gases. Therefore we can infer the central idea of this collage is the danger of greenhouse gases in threatening the arctic environment. Science technology and the environment would be the best global area. A literary text that may relate to this collage is Tarpon by Derek Walcott.

In this collage, the top section displays a photograph depicting a view through a window of a ravaged hotel located in Mosul, the capital city of Iraq, a city that has seen significant damage and destruction. The window's frame on the top portion of the image displays visible damage caused by weapons - bullet holes and cracks - which suggest the building's state of disrepair. This emphasizes the impact of war and violence in the city. The bottom portion of the image showcases three individuals who are in an art gallery, viewing a piece of art that resembles the famous painting “Starry Night” created by the renowned artist, Vincent Van Gogh.

I found the collage striking due to its presentation of a well-known painting adjacent to a window-framed depiction of the crumbling and destroyed buildings of Mosul. Additionally, the colors used in each image are distinct from one another; the art piece features various colors of blue, yellow, green, and white with the details of buildings and mountains surrounding it, while the scenery of Mosul primarily consists of the colors gray and white due to debris from the aftermath of the war.

Ugar Gallen developed this collage to convey to his audience, that both scenarios can be powerful due to the contrasting elements they present. On one hand, the art piece represents beauty, imagination, and creativity. On the other hand, the window frame depicts the harsh reality of destruction and devastation. The combination of these two visual elements creates a provocative and thought-provoking composition that forces us to consider the relationship between art and violence, and the complex emotional impact of war and its aftermath.

In the image above it is a collage of the flash and something that appears to be a person on fire. And they are both running. The flash a fictional hero that can run really fast. And above that seems to be a person in a burning building trying to allude to the reality of things. They both seem to be trying to outrun something. This was a collage back in 2021 that was based on a protest in 2017 where a demonstrator caught on fire during a protest after trying attack a police motorcycle and a gas tank exploded. This was a protest against the government and was then accused of rewriting the the constitution and dodging elections to control power. This connects to the global context of power, politics and justice. Based on what happened in this image it alludes to the audience of reality and how we are powerless. And how the government has power and how that power can be controlled. This can connected to the book of MAcbeth

In the collage, Uger Allen sliced two pictures together, the photo on the right contains a young child walking with their father while eating an apple. The image on the left is of another man however this time wearing a contamination suit, carrying a skinny child. The images contain very contrasting colors, with the right image containing lots of bright green and some pink, however, the left image has a dark red, and much darker tones apart from the white fence or building in the background.

This image was to spread awareness of World Humanitarian Day which honors humanitarian aid work all over the world. The humanitarian worker in the left image is a doctor without borders who is carrying a child who is suspected of having Ebola. The girl and her mother were showing symptoms of the deadly disease and were awaiting test results. I believe that Uger Allen is trying to show that no matter if it's their own child for example in the right image or another person's child; humanitarian workers will put their lives at risk to help since this virus could easily kill them.

This collage also tries to depict the difference between the modern world we live in compared to 3rd world countries in other places. Ebola has been around in central Africa for many decades now. The curing of ebola depends on the supportive care that a patient receives and considering the region where most outbreaks happen, supportive care is difficult. Many people around the world have access to healthcare because of where they live, however, the kids in the image obviously do not and that's why humanitarian doctors have to move around the world to help treat others. The message behind this image ultimately leads to two different directions, one is trying to honor humanitarian workers for what they've done. Secondly, I believe it's painting a bigger picture of poverty, specifically in Africa and the affects it has on young children.

Posted on fathers day, this collage shows a 30 year old father (Salem) bathing his daughter and niece in a bathtub in in his house after an Israeli airstrike which took place in 2015. You can see the extent of the damage that that the airstrike caused to the area in the background and by looking at the rubble the floor. Although the three persons are in a war ridden state, they all seem to be happy, or at least not upset. This contradicts where they are and the situation they are in. Ugur uses a picture of clean and intact bathroom to stand beside the harsh photo on the left. The bathroom seems to be large as it is a stand alone tub with towels and lots of light. Knowing this we can tell what the narrative or the message of the collage is.

What Ugur wants to get across is the fact that although some people in this world have access or are privileged enough to afford lavish things ie. a large bathroom, not all have to worry about those possessions being destroyed due to war. Salem utilizing his bathroom despite his situation shows how he has no control over his situation and has to continue living his normal life even though his house and neighborhood has been destroyed.

This collage is particularly impactful, along with many others, due to its message. Due to the actions of higher up or people who have power, everyone else becomes a victim. Their lives are destroyed and they don’t have the power to change that. All that they can do is try to continue on living trying to get though each day. Furthermore, while this kind of situation might be the norm Ugur highlights how there are many people in this world who don’t even have to think about this current situations because of where they live.

To me, this sort of relates to Purple Hibiscus when looking at the comparison between Aunty Ifeoma and Papa. Although they are siblings, they live in very different situations where one doesn’t have to worry about a war as much as the other. Where one is more directly impacted compared to the other. And despite the close relation, one does not help the other even though they have to power and resources to do so. This kind of links back to real life where people who have an excess amount of power and resources utilize their earnings to benefit themselves.

They are holding hands and the colors of that photo are vibrant which could show a sign of happyness. The photo on the right shows a more dull colored picture. There are 4 kids, one of them is fully shown. Each of them are using crutches which demonstrate the violence they've been through. The crutches are the antithesis of the skiing poles.
Ugar Gallen created this collage to have an understanding to the audience that kids that have gone through war. The kids look the same age in the photo but 2 completly different lives. Ugar Gallen framed it so that the kids could looked chained to eachother. The 2 photos demostrated the relation between war and luxury.

The story:
"Children bear brutal cost of endless war. As 10 children from the same family were walking to school last year, they came across an unexploded mortar bomb - a common sight in Afghanistan, where war still rages between the Taliban and US-backed national forces. Not realising what is was or the dangers it posed, the curious kids picked up the device and took it to show to an aunt. And then it exploded. Three children and the older relative were killed, and the remaining seven lost at least one limb each.
During the war in Afganistan (2001-present), over 31-000 civilian deaths due to war-related violence have been documented; 29,000 civilians have been wounded. Over 111,000 Afghans, including civilians, soldiers and militants, are estimated to have been killed in the conflict. These numbers do not include those who have died in Pakistan."

The collage above is a split between da Vinci's Madonna Litta and an image of a young child receiving oxygen via a tube in her nose due to contracting measles. In the split of Madonna Litta (on the right of the collage), there is a woman (the Virgin Mary) who's hair is wrapped in a plaid fabric that hangs down onto her neck. She is wearing an orange shirt with a blue shawl over it. Her head is tilted and seemingly nurturing a baby, who's head you can slightly see before the split. On the left side of the collage, is a young child that is being held be it's mother. The child is laying it's head on the mother for comfort, whilst receiving oxygen.
The split between the two images creates are very stagnant composition. The sharp line between the to create no flow from one to the other, and instantly makes the viewer look at the collage as 2 separate images rather than a whole. Likewise, the fact that one image is a painting while the other is an image of a young child suffering, this adds to to the low energy and motionlessness. The painting seems very peaceful and nurturing, and the other does feel as peaceful rather its feels more of a breathe of release that the child will be okay.
Madonna Litta is a painting that symbolizes the maternal love between a mother and child and Gallenkus contrasts that with the fact that although the might be struggling at this moment there will always be that maternal love in every circumstance. Even more in this time of despair, based on the body language alone, this child seems to be seeking comfort in a motherly figure.

I think that this collage is a reference to how as human beings we all need comfort or find comfort in someone that is always there to look down on use and nurture us. Especially as children, we try to form close relationships with people that seem to care and have faith in us even when things don't exactly look the best for the future.

Domestic Abuse.

In this collage on the left show cases a happy female individual most likely shown to be enjoying her time in the moment. There are green plants behind her and she is sitting on a chair. All this could mean she is at a social gathering with her friends. In a time where there are no social distancing or mask wearing in effect.

On the right there is bruised, female. Based on her facial expressions, she seems; scared, feeling isolated, helpless and abused. She is holding her hands close to each other in an attempt to comfort herself out of panic. However, this only further suggest that she is not in a state of peace and in rather one of worthy and uncertainty. The bruises suggest that the tourment she faces is not occasional but rather frequent as the facial expression showcases that she is also use to this kind of treatment. As if it was rather expected. In society, when an individual gets use to this sort of treatment they are less likely to report it. The reasons for this could be, they feel trapped, they are afraid of what the other person might do, or simply no one would care or people may not believe and this could be dependent on the social status on their significant other.
Gallenkus made this collage to showcase the domestic abuse and trauma individuals had to face when staying at home in isolation during the COVID -19 pandemic.
This has been proven when a data study that was conducted showcased that during the COVID-19 pandemic domestic abuse against female individuals spiked by 30% as women had no place to flee to or spend their time other than in the presence of their significant other.

This collage shares a lot in common with "Purple Hibiscus"- Adichi. In relation to Kambili's mother. During her time outside and away from Eugene. She was able to enjoy herself and sing songs with her children. However, when she was at home She had to face Eugene's extreme anger issues. Because of these, she was repeatedly beaten and ridiculed. Which led to her having several miscarriages. This obviously ended up having a toll on her mental health and she was unable to keep herself together in public. In the end she poisoned Eugene which lead to the downfall of the family.

However, the relationship between these two images is that domestic abuse could be undetected, a person may not have physical bruises, but mental trauma and abnormal social behaviour which could all be signs that home is not a safe place. Many people may use social gatherings as a distraction from their harsh realities of life as they desperately try to escape it. To create a false sense of security/safety that they force themselves to believe in.

Factory work v. school work

In this collage by Ugur Gallenkus, two disparate images are spliced together diagonally. In the top/left image, we see a young shirtless boy working in a factory. He is quite thin and his brown skin shines with sweat from the heat, the hard labor, or a combination of the two. He is surrounded by countless machines. He looks weary and unhappy.

In the lower/right image, we see the torso of a boy. It appears the setting is a school library since he is surrounded by books and is carrying a blue backpack. He wears a crisp white shirt and a watch. He holds an open book.

Ugur Gallenkus has spliced the images in such a way that the factory worker's shoulder is aligned with that of the school boy's creating the illusion -- briefly -- that they are the same, that they are one boy (though this is a bit imperfect as there are two right arms visible).

This work appears to be a comment on the inequality and injustice experienced by youth in some nations. Many children, like Sobuj, are forced to work in "sweat shops" like this textile factory in Bangladesh and are denied the opportunity to attend school. This is in contrast with the boy in the lower right portion of the collage. His watch, his shirt, and the books all serve as powerful symbols of the privileges and opportunities he has.

Similar to his other works, this collage speaks to the global issues under the field of inquiry Politics, Power and Justice and, more specifically, the global issues of human rights/children's rights.

If I were linking this to a text, I would probably lean towards Purple Hibiscus. Reviewing the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child makes me think of Kambili. Though she had access to education (no pressure!) she was not safe from violence.

This image is a collage of two different photographs, of which have been taken in nations that are vastly different.
On the left half of the image, there are two young girls skiing in a mountanous landscape. They are wearing luminous and brightly coulored coldwear, which looks warm and expensive. Both young girls are having a good time doing the activity, and are not stressed or in pain in any way.

On the other half of the image, there is a photograph taken from a seemingly third world country, probably afghanistan. The subject of the photo on the right is a young amputee, who looks like he isnt even a teenager yet. The boy is being held up by two crutches, which remind the audience of the ski poles from the photograph on the left.

This collage was created to show the different in choice and privalege that different classes have. The children are using the poles to have fun, and chose to do a slightly dangerous activity to get away from regular mundane life, but the afghan child uses them to live a normal life, after being hurt by other peoples dangerous ways. The fact that there are other children of similar ages with the same crutches shows how unsafe the living conditions are, that there are this many severely injured children of such a young age and that it is almost unavoidable in nations engaging in civil war or defending themselves from more powerful groups.

The ability to choose between engaging in a dangerous activity and having to grow up avoiding them shows that these nations are worlds apart in terms of quality of life, and the author created this collage to contrast the two worlds and bring awareness to the dangerous lives that these struggling children live

When you look at the background you can see tents, which makes me believe that he is in a refugee camp. Not only that but also the condition of the location. On the right you can see four children with backpacks signifying that they are walking into a school.

The picture on the left is taken in a refugee camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo on the 20th of October 2012 following a war between the M23 rebel movement and the armed forces of the DRC.

I think the UNICEF bag and the backpacks are meant to signify the different intents of the different children. The children are headed to learn and he is headed back to his tent to maintain his safety during the war.

This image shows privilege and how your geographical location can affect your well-being. In both circumstances, they are just children who have the same goals and ideals however one is unfairly unable to attend school because of the government of the country in which he resides.

I think that this relates to "Ruins of a Great House" by Derek Walcott because it's about how war and colonialism affected Derek Walcott's childhood and overall life and I think that the image relates to how the war can not only affect the child in the image but more so childhood as a whole.

Ugur Gallen collaged two pictures together. On the left there is a young Sudan boy rolling a jug of water. While on the right side of the collage there are two boys playing football. The meaning behind this picture is; many look forward to the warm days of summer , millions of children worry ever more about rising seasonal temperature and the further impact this will have on their access to food and safe drinking water. For context; The horn of Africa was facing it's longest drought in four decades, and early warning systems were estimating that it was on the brink of famine. In south Sudan alone, it was estimated that more than 3 million children were suffering from malnutrition.

The composition of th eleft side of th ecollage, in the foreground there is a young boy who looks malnurished rolling what seems to me a water jug, while in the background there are tents and structure made of scrap. The right side of the collage in the foreground there are two young boys who are well dressed in football attire playing and look very nourished. In the background, are just chairs which to me seem slike they are playing in a stadium. The graphic and impact of the collage weighs more to the left.

The object that connects the two photos together. The football and water jug. This shows that others have a harder life than others, but still find the good in their situation. The water jug shows that even at a young age you are put in a situation where your childhood isn't how it should be but having to work a everyday just to survive the unfair circumstances.

The color used in these images are very different. On the right the colors are more bright and vibrant compared to the left which is more simmered in color and doesn't have the vibrancy as the right image. It is portrayed like this to show the struggle and situation the left side is really going through, whereas the right shows how peaceful and carefree the children playing football are.

I would connect this with

The collage I chose consists of two photos merged and split diagonally. On the left there is a green field full of cows grazing, with abundant greenery in the background. Further back we are able to see a wide landscape full of mountains and diverse terrain. To the right there is a much more minimal image of one skinny cow on a terrain of dirt and cracked land. The caption of the instagram post with this picture described mass displacement from homes and extreme famine due to widespread drought and flooding in the Greater Horn of Africa and Sahel regions (Spanning across North & North-East Africa).

The use of space in both images is one of the biggest differences between them, with much more detail present in the left image than the right. There are many cows, with only one cow crossing into the second image. This represents the large populations of both people and animals affected by the issue across both regions, as well as the lack of food present. This not only has affected sentient beings like animals and people, but also has affected crops and diversity in nature which is necessary for ecosystems to survive. The only cow to cross over into the second image being in the middle draws the audience's attention to it and the issue at hand.

The colors in the left image are not only much more vibrant but also have much more variation, again showing the complexity and abundance of wildlife and plants present in Africa. On the right however, there is a monotone brown color covering the majority of the image that represents the lack of life/food. This image has one other color, the blue of the sky. This blue compared to the brown could represent the extreme fluctuations in weather that caused this famine or could also represent hope that the animals and people can be saved. This point can be supported by the fact that there is still a cow present in the second image as opposed to no wildlife at all.

I think the main purpose of this image is to raise awareness of the crisis in Africa and Gallenkus is highlighting this through the massive contrast between the two images. The vibrant image being on the left and transitioning into the image on the right could be intentional to show what has been lost compared to what exists in the present day. The image on the left, due to its minimalism, also has much less movement and energy.

The literary text that I would relate to this image is either "Ruins of a Great House" by Derek Walcott or his other poem "A Far Cry From Africa," because they both compare the past against the present. A Far Cry From Africa as well is specifically about post-colonial Africa, and this could relate to this collage because the extreme weather in Africa is also an effect of human activity causing climate change.

In this collage, Ugur Gallen connects two photos of nature, by merging them through the cracks that can be seen in each photo. In the background of the image on the left is a glacier, with melting ice sheets in the foreground. The scene looks picturesque with the sunset in the background. The overall tone of the colours in the photo is warm and inviting, contradicting the other image. In the photo on the right, the background is quite bleak as it lacks colour. In the foreground, there is a dead tree and the soil is cracked due to lack of water.

I found this image interesting as it depicts the different effects, climate change has on the environment. The image on the right is what is presumed the effects of climate change would have on the environment. There is very little colour and the effects can be seen as there are no animals and very few plants. However, the glacier image is also being affected by climate change. The ice sheets cracking is an effect of rising temperatures, yet due to the colours, it is easy to assume that there isn't a problem. We can assume that Gallen is implying in this collage that the effects of climate change won't always be visible and will require more research to fully understand its effects.

A deeper interpretation of the collage can link this image to how little is known about the ocean and the effects humans have on it. Because we live on land, we can see the effects of climate change on terrestrial environments as shown in the image on the right. Thus, there are more laws in place to protect different ecosystems. However, because humans do not live underwater, there are fewer legislations to protect aquatic environments and therefore most people don't know the exact effect climate change is having on the ocean.

I believe the main purpose of this collage was to inform people and raise awareness about the varying effects of climate change and how it can be expressed in the environment.

The backstory of the image to the right is a Syrian boy in the devastated town of Kobane due to the Syrian civil war. The Syrian Civil War was first protests but then ended up escalating into a civil war. The reason the protests first started was because people were unhappy about the high levels of unemployment, corruption, and lack of political freedom.

On the left, we can assume that the boy is very fortunate in life because he is living in a location where there seems to be no conflict or war. The boy is playing with either a friend or a family member because the see-saw is angled towards the left which means another person has to be present for the see-saw to work. The boy is in a public park because of the equipment within the background and the setting of the location.

The image to the right is a war-torn country of Syria and in the background, we see a destroyed tank with building ruins and rumble. The boy seems to be happy possibly hinting that conflict within his town has finally ended. The collage shows how two different children have different ways of feeling happiness.
