Which words to learn?

When reading a text, identify the words that are not familiar to you. Among those, choose the words that are essential to understand the text. These are usually content words, like nouns or verbs, without which the text is not clear to you. If you can guess the meaning of the word by its context, probably you don't want to learn it this time. Depending on your purpose, you might want to learn different words. For example, if you plan to study in the English language, it's a good idea to focus on the Academic Word List words.

How to keep track of the new words?

Create a separate document for the new words. It can be as simple as the word itself and its definition or synonym. However, a more complex table including such columns as the new word, its definition, transcription, collocations, word families and a sample sentence, would be much more helpful for you to know more about the word. This document is sometimes called the Word Bank.

Is it enough to just memorize the new words?

Actually, to ONLY memorize a new word does not mean you have learned it. To learn a new word implies knowing how to USE it properly IN a CONTEXT! Correspondingly, I suggest that you practice new words in the context from the very beginning, too. For example, you can start with answering questions to the text. Make sure you use the new vocabulary when doing this. Next, you can retell the story you've read. You can discuss the story with a friend, write a few sentences related to the same topic, or express your opinion about what you've read. Make sure you use the Word Bank to check for word families and collocations to enrich your vocabulary.

How to review the new words efficiently?

There are fun ways to review the new words. You can use paper cards with different categories, like Word Families or Collocations, or you can use electronic cards on Quizlet. You can also review Kahoot activities, like fill in the blanks or choose the correct word in a sentence. Finally, challenge yourself! Be creative and make up a fun short story where the new words can be used in a totally new, engaging context!
