To learn a new word implies knowing how to USE it properly IN a CONTEXT! Correspondingly, I suggest that you practice new words in the context from the very beginning, too. For example, you can start with answering questions to the text. Make sure you use the new vocabulary when doing this. Next, you can retell the story you've read. You can discuss the story with a friend, write a few sentences related to the same topic, or express your opinion about what you've read.
