A makerspace allows students to collaborate and be creative. They are safe spaces to design and build and allow for self-directed learning. Anytime learning can be made fun is a positive and makerspaces allow students to learn without it feeling like a chore.
- Colleen

I love how makerspacing is giving people a space to explore their "tinkering" abilities, where people can come together to collaborate and create. This will only benefit everyone as new inventions to help everyone are created. - Brenda

When you engage in activities to create something new you must come with an open mind and collaborative spirit. If an individual comes to a Makerspace and dominates with their personality and style of designing something then it takes away from the intention of these spaces to stimulate a safe sharing environment and learning about others and reflecting on your own perspectives. In Makerspaces I also believe it is important not to fall in love with your own ideas as it automatically makes one more close minded to other ideas and it may not be the best one. Ideas should be generated it abundance when collaborating with others and being able to change directions in a design is critical.

I like how David Clifford talks about 'finding a common language across content areas' ( at 1 min 43 sec)

- Edwin F

Who is Makerspacing?

I like the concept that all people can engage in makerspace, but also I think something overlooked is that not everyone may be interested in makerspacing. While this works really well for many people, the idea of tinkering and creating something does not appeal to everyone. Through the week when I learned about this, I can see the tremendous value in having an area like makerspace available, but this is not something that every type of student would enjoy. While everyone is capable, and should at least try - makerspace could also be a space that creates discomfort for some.

From a personal standpoint, I would not necessarily walk into a makerspace and be completely willing and open initially. For some, levels of trust and community need to be established first in order for full participation. Alternatively, some may walk into a makerspace ready to share and collaborate. I think the acknowledgement of both possibilities is something to keep in mind when viewing the users, or potential users of a makerspace.
-Laila
