In both the show and the play, there was an actual dog that was seen as the "Hound". This particular detail added to both versions because it gives an explanation as to why people were actually seeing a hound. Although the details of the hound were made out to be scarier than they were, it was still only a big dog.

As said previously, there was also similarities in the way the Hound was portrayed in the character's minds. In both pieces, the Hound was said to have horrifying details, such as red eyes and a glowing body. This is important due to the fact we need a reason to be scared of said Hound, and the characters also need to have some sort of conflict in order for Sherlock and Watson to be called.

Some similarities can also be found in the setting of both stories. It's said in both the play and episode that the case takes place on a desolate, creepy moor covered in fog. Obviously, the setting is extremely important as it sets the scene and also provides details that can prove to be important to the story itself(such as the fog in the episode, the isolation of the manor, the overall tone, etc.)

In the show Sherlock, the name "Baskerville" was given to a military base that was the centerpoint of mystery in the story. Baskerville was actively doing secret experiments, with many different scientist apart of these hidden projects, including a person we're introduced to during the mid-point of the plot that ends up being the culprit. Baskerville in the play however differed, Baskerville was the name of a family and their estate. This served the plot by acting as a main place Sherlock and Watson would be set in, and making it so theirs a more controlled group of suspects.

Personally, I found the episode to be overall more entertaining and interesting. Not only were there clear visuals and actual actors portraying the characters, it was also just a better version of the story in general. The concept was made more interesting by the fact that experiments and secret organizations were involved with the whole mystery. It was easier to get sucked into the story as well when there's music, special effects, and real actors instead of students reading lines off of a paper.

In "The Hounds of Baskerville", the culprit was Bob Franklin instead of Kathy Stapleton. Due to the fact the plots were a little different from each other, the killer had to have a different motive. In this case, Bob was apart of an organization that developed chemical weapons for warfare. Since it was shut down, Bob wanted to continue the research, which resulted in him testing out an airborne drug that caused Henry Knight to hallucinate the killer hound killing his father. Kathy on the other hand, was motivated by the inheritance she would get if she killed the Baskervilles. These details are important to both plots, because they're the answer to the mystery. They're vital to wrapping up the story.

While the hound in both the play and episode was infact a real hound, the hounds served different purposes. The hound in the show Sherlock, was simply a red herring in the story, the dog was untamed with aggressive behaviors who due to circumstances shown in the show had happened to be in the moor during the time Sherlock was on the case. The fear of the dog being caused by the hallucinogenics in the moors fog and the legend surrounding it. Although the hound in the play was a cover-up used by Cathy for her crimes, because she knew that people had feared the stories talking about the hound so she used them to her advantage.

The episode in my personal opinion was overall better then the play, I found the play disinteresting while the episode was fun to watch. The story in the episode grabbed my attention more, because the plot was more easy to follow because of the visuals, it wasn't something you had to read or pay super close attention to, because everything flowed super well together. All-around I found the episode greater then the play.
