He was dragged into a doctors office by two older kids that had found out his "weakness". Mudgett was afraid of the skeleton on display there and the children had brought him right up to it. After the struggle, Mudgett simply "gazed at the skeleton with cool appreciation" (39) and at that point Mudgett became a different person. We later find out that Mudgetts parents were "devout Methodist" (39) and their response to insignificant misbehavior was sending the child to the attic with no food and the order not to speak.</div>]]></description>
