I had a teacher express to me that our secure staff allowed students to sit in chairs that the teacher had placed in the room for the secure staff. He further stated "I want all students to be seated in a student desk, not staff". After he explained the entire incident he concluded that the best response was to remove all chairs from his classroom and of course tries to end our conversation with "just wanted you to know why there are no chairs in my classroom". Before he could leave I asked if I could give him a suggestion. I began to explain that the best way to develop a team with secure staff is to demonstrate care and support for them. So I stated, "could you ask the secure staff about how to handle the situation. Let them know what you want to accomplish and ask if the chairs are too much of a temptation for the students". The teacher agreed and the chairs remained in the classroom and students are not allowed to use them. They are for staff only.

I have many of these examples. I am training my staff to genuinely care about and get to know the secure staff. Then we can ensure unity and teamwork. My aim is to destroy the "us" verses "them" mentality.

By the end of this month i should FINALLY have a full education staff at my facility. Since December it has only been myself, a TA and the welding instructor for the whole facility. I have been the only certified teacher on campus since November and i lost a vocation instructor that had been with the facility for 13 years at the beginning of December. I'll be able to start fresh with a whole new education staff. I know it will be a struggle to begin with as we learn about each other and figuring out what will work for everyone. Plus it will help with implementing my Capstone Project at our facility. Thankfully the group of kids we have have been very understanding.
Side Note:
I hate that i will not be in attendance tomorrow. I will be there in spirit. :) David and Lynette make sure Renette leads a game of Big Party!!!! :D
