The Formosan black bear is the only kind of bear that lives in Taiwan. It has a special white “V” shape on its chest.


There are only about 200–600 Formosan black bears left in the wild. They live in the big mountains of central Taiwan, usually 1,000–3,500 meters high. A bear can walk and live in a very large area, as big as 560 square kilometers!


Because people cut down trees and use the land, the number of bears is getting smaller. In 1989, the Formosan black bear was listed as an endangered animal. In 2001, it was chosen as the most important wild animal in Taiwan.
