the competition was tough, but duchess dowager jin was confident in haeun's win for the diamond of the season. not because haeun was guaranteed to win, the women who surrounded her were all prepped and primed... yet, her mother had a sort of confidence around haeun's win that was unfounded.

in all honesty, haeun thought it was just because the duchess refused to accept anything else. and haeun's absolute refusal to not be in her mother's good graces, no matter how much she hated it, didn't help either. haeun couldn't think of a life where she didn't win this year, either.

so, she did.

haeun didn't have time to celebrate, even though she would be seen as the most sought for unwed women in all of joseon, yet, her engagement hung over her head. it would not be long before she would be wed, before the courting would come to be, even if suitors would flood the jin family. duchess dowager perhaps just liked haeun getting that attention, even if haeun didn't care all that much.

i don’t really mind where our threads are, walls, pms, or rooms. i would prefer rooms just to keep the rp active and getting us both some points, but i really don’t mind wherever. i do prefer to plot in group pms and keep any potential triggering or nsfw plots to pms. i also don't use brackets when talking in group pms lol i expect it to be ooc anyway.i would prefer if you came to me with a plot in mind, and i will try and do the same. plotting is usually not too hard for me to do, but sometimes i can get quite stumped. winging is fine, but i am still quite new to it so it can blind-side me a bit ghjfb

the jin family, with all their power and money, cultivated the woman that haeun is to be spoiled, resentful towards her mother, and loyal. while it may not make sense to others, it did to their little family. and that was what mattered.
arranged marriages were common in the family, and in the rest of joseon, thus, jin haeun was married to ga yuseong.
neither of them had many expectations for the arranged marriage. haeun was not upset about this as this was just what she grew up with, and she didn't care much about being forced into it. her husband, however, made it clear from the night of their wedding when they were expected to "tie the knot", had told haeun that he was not interested in women, only men. yuseong gave haeun a deal, she would pretend to be his wife, and she would be allowed to have any sexual or romantic relationships she wanted, and he would try his best to cover up for her when needed. it was a deal haeun had to agree with, but one she grew to not mind.
as time went on, haeun would have secret relationships that varied from purely fuelled by sexual desire, or short-lived romances that would typically end in disaster as they did not like having to keep their relationships quiet.
however, one man she met with regularly, though she was a stickler for safe sex, she ended up getting pregnant with his baby.

Haeun waited on the wayside of their ancestral estate, the garden untouched but blooming with late summer flowers. Autumn was to come quicker than she had expected. The fire brimming around the Kingdom gave the green trees their dead brown colour before their time was up.

"Mother?"

Haeun turned her head, eyes catching her son's eyes as he stepped out into the garden before her. It was beginning to be hard to look at him without that sad smile on her face, something she was sure he had noticed.

"Yes, Seong-ah?" Haeun hummed and quickly looked back to the flowers. The blue hydrangea caught her eyes before any other bloom. "Are you feeling well? You aren't hurt, are you?"

"Not really," Seong murmured, settling down on the bench beside his mother. Sitting down, he was already taller than her. Haeun rested her hand on his shoulder, smiling to herself. "The servants just keep doting on my head. The man barely hit me, I didn't even pass out." He grumbled and crossed his arms over his chest. "It should be you they are worrying over..." Seong muttered, though Haeun could hear him.

"It is their job to worry over you," Haeun said. "You are a valuable member of the house, even if you are not Orabeoni's son. I am fine, after all. My ankle is already doing much better."

Seong shrugged, leaning back. He seemed to have a lot on his mind. It was still challenging to see Seong as someone who would be a grown adult in the next few years. In a way, Haeun still remembered when he was a young boy who would cling to his father whenever an unknown servant would come near him. Now, Seong always seemed to have something on his mind to distract him from the outside world. Haeun thought that he was much like herself. His head was always in the stars.

"If we were at father's house, would we be safe?" Seong's voice was small, and Haeun could swear she saw that little boy again in front of her. "Would we have been attacked like this if he were still here?"

Haeun bit her lip. It was hard for her not to think the same. Though Seong only knew of one father, Haeun could see where the lines would blur, which father he could mean. Haeun wished she could see just as clearly as Seong could. It was Haeun's own fault why his vision had been tampered. It was impossible to see what the eyes did not know.

"I don't know, Seong-ah." Haeun whispered. "I have not received any correspondence from that house in a long time. If something had happened to it, I would not know."

"When can we go back?" Seong looked to his mother then, and despite being nearly 14 years old, indeed a man in many's eyes, there were tears in his. "Why can't we go back?" His voice shook as he spoke, his hands clenched into fists in his lap. "I don't like how... How people talk about you..."

Haeun reached out and put her hand on his to quell Seong's shaking hands. When he looked up, she pulled him into her embrace, tears threatening to breach her eyes too. "We can't go back until you are of age, Seong-ah. I'm sorry. Don't listen to what they say; your mother is just trying to do what's best for you. I don't want you to be left with nothing because of me." Her voice was soft, so she wasn't even sure if Seong could still hear her. "Your father is still looking out for us. He has never stopped."

the baby grew up healthy with the belief of his father being who haeun said he was. yuseong, despite what many thing of gay men, had been more than happy to raise a child. they named the boy seong.
things had gone well, even though her brother's life had gone awry due to his wife and her lover. but when jaeha exiled dojeon, tragedy had struck the jin family. the curse had spread slowly, eventually hitting haeun's small pocket at the beginning of 1868.
ga yuseong died due to a family hereditary illness, one that usually did not affect the men until they were around 50-years-old. haeun and her brother suspected that this was due to the curse, and as seong grew and his features had looked less and less like his supposed father, rumours had spread...
in the late spring of 1869, ga haeun had changed her name back to jin and fled to hanseong, under the guise of wanting to be closer to her brother's family from a family friend's wedding. she worked closer with the royal family as their advisor, and did not look back.
