Mao's Goals were one, to provide a better life for the poor. Two, was to develop China into modern economy. Lastly, he wanted to restore China's position as major world power. China though had a huge population that needed to be fed, clothed, and given shelter. The Communists later took over, changing their government. Mao did not like this way of government, as it took money from him and his government. The money was gave to the workers in this Communist government.

Reorganization of Agriculture

With a Communists Government, they decided to reorganize agriculture. This was the Land Reform in the 1950s. The Communists took land and split it evenly among people with no land previous. They wanted to form collective farms. This is where members worked for the state, and received a share in necessities just for work. This changed the way china's farms worked.

The Great Leap Forward

Mao divided China into communes. The government made this decision. This is a village with a lot of land where a lot of people work. This was a way to stop inequality, and have everyone work as one. The Great Leap Forward was not a success. It led to disaster in China. Food and industrial production fell, because of the lack of encouragement among the workers. They thought if they received the clothes, food, and housing anyway they worked, then they didn't need to put in much effort. This meant the production of food and other things fell, because the workers went slower and slower in their work process.

Many Chinese blamed Mao for the disaster that occurred after the great leap forward. Mao wanted people to root out people that followed capitalism, and he wanted to go back to the way the government was before communism. Mao organized the Red Guards, attacking people who did not agree with Mao's ways. The cultural revolution caused chaos in China. Schools and factories closed. Many lost faith in Mao Zedong, for all the wrong he had done.
