I grew up hearing family stories about my parents and grandparents. I marveled at how they overcame hardships in their paths along the way...one consistent thread that connected everything was the belief that faith and family would always see you through. As a child I learned through their words and deeds that I matter.

My mother knew that family was everything. Holidays and vacations were basically car trips to see relatives in other states. Cooking, eating and laughing are the strongholds of my mother's connections and she passed that to my brother and me. He lives in Nevada and we talk almost daily and plan adventures together. When we can't be together for the holidays, he always calls to check on a recipe - food and love! Even though she was a single parent in the mid 70's, Sunday dinners were mandatory and while there weren't cell phones then, I'm certain we'd have to put them away. The table was for connecting, talking, sharing and being together. Cheers to the future!

My mother never said she was upset with me when something less than ideal happened. Got caught in a lie, she was disappointed. Got a low grade, disappointed. Fighting with siblings, disappointed. As an adult I look back on these moments and realize that feeling her disappointment gave me was stronger than any anger she could have shown. It has made a difference in my life, always. I strive to not disappoint, whether it be my mother, employer, friends. Feeling like you have disappointed someone is the worst and it teaches personal accountability. This child rearing methodology should be used more often. I could see a whole generation growing up making every effort to make others feel happy rather than disappointed. A whole generation that is confident, healthy, and responsible because they have had the horrible experience of making someone feel disappointed.

When I was young, my grandfather told me about what it was like when he grew up. I distinctly remember him telling me "We were too busy trying to make a living to get involved in things like that". His meaning; he worked hard for his to support his family and did not involve himself in the issues of the time. That often held true to the problems of my time. Work hard for your goals and avoid the nonsense.

Tradition of Bedtime Stories

One of my favorite memories as a child was the nightly tradition of getting to snuggle up for a story. The stories intrigued me but also provided me a chance to ask questions about the experiences of the characters. I heard about how they were able to battle the scary monsters under the bed, or make new friends, or make UP with their old friends when need be. Sharing and connecting gave me a safe place to ask questions or express my own fears, like the characters in the stories.
The mother and son in this photo are dear friends who, I am glad, are enjoying this very important tradition.

For me, the long list of tasks I must complete in a day or week seem daunting. I have a calendar on my phone, but the layout doesn't seem to help me focus. Writing things down on paper and splitting my weekly tasks between days makes everything seem a little more manageable. I am able to complete everything I need to do and feel accomplished when I can check everything off for the day. I have learned that after a stressful day, I can bounce back to a relaxing mood when seeing that I have checked the last thing off my list. Time management is an important part of being resilient as it can calm stress and boost the feeling of accomplishment.

Family Pets ~ Comfort Companions

I can not say enough about the comfort that I get from our “furry family members” during times of great struggle and change. Unconditional love that is freely given by our dogs, cats, horses or other pets is often that missing piece that some don’t find in other relationships. Our pets DO have a place in building our resilience.
