How this course has influenced your understanding of EBP?

When starting this class I saw evidence based practice as more of a general concept of "using research". After going through this class and analyzing the research that my group found, I see that EBP is more structured. This structure involves a rigorous approach that combines evidence of the highest quality, expert clinicians and that research will serve as a guide for decisions made in the clinic. I see EBP now as more of a foundation that we follow rather than a tool we use.

EBP evolved mostly for me after we did the PICO. Looking at my groups research that we analyzed I was able to pick apart the study and understand what patients were studied, what interventions were used, what alternatives were compared and what the outcomes were. This was impactful for me because I was able to look at the study in a new light than prior to starting the class. One concept that stuck with me was the 3-pronged EBP approach for patients, because of this when i read the study I was consistently thinking how this would help my future patients. All of this influenced my view on EBP in a positive way now that I can finally put myself in a PT's thought process on how to analyze and apply research in the clinic.

When it comes to clinically making decisions, I feel as if I will favor dual-task training for stroke patients over single-task. This is because I have analyzed the study my group chose and I understand the outcomes are beneficial to patients when compared to single-task training. Other than the study I analyzed, in the future I will also look at diagnostic accuracy metrics like sensitivity and specificity for reliability of the future methods provided.
Obstacles that may arise is time and access to articles. These are easy obstacles to overcome as I will go out of my way to make time and find articles outside of the workplace. I will also find groups or work with my coworkers to stay connected to new findings.
The role of critical appraisal is extremely important which is why I will use it regularly when evaluating studies before applying them in the clinic. Looking at randomization, blinding and outcome measures to judge how trustworthy the study is.

I believe my clinical reasoning has improved after taking this class, being able to not just ask "what works" but "why" it works and for "who" is a huge improvement in a matter of 2 months.
Another extremely important skill I have gained is advocating for my patients and better patient education. I can defend my plan of care for my patient by stating these studies to anyone that asks as to why I am going down a certain path of treatment.
